Hey, 'reriker', I don't want to ruin a great soliloquy, but I do want to step in and mention that there's another thread where a couple of members talk about using Google's Writely (about halfway down the thread).

One of the difficulties is trying to figure out where to post some things (or, where to find them, too). However, I have placed these here because of the emerging tech aspect. Perhaps you would like to point them here? Thanks. rer

Yes, it's an ongoing problem about where to place things here on the message boards --kind of like trying to put books on the library shelves in a "logical" order. sigh. Good idea about cross-linking both ways. I'll go do that.

I haven't tried it, but the Adobe ConnectNow (http://www.adobe.com/acom/connectnow/) may be of particular interest as it has conferencing capabilities that are free for up to 3 participants.

Well, it is beautiful! Unfortunately you need to create an account just to browse the offerings. That's a bummer because I have account fatigue these days.

I know Adobe has been touted as an alternative to either Google or Microsoft in the web business applications war.
As a manager, I would worry about putting my library district's files on someone else's servers. There are both practical and legal reasons.
Then again, if something's subpoened and vanishes into cyberspace .... ;-)

RE: Re: Online Office/Productivity Software

as a reply to Bob Watson.
There are two separate issues here. One is using a browser interface to access common office applications. The second is "cloud computing" and storing your data on servers owned by someone else.
The first is simply preference. IMHO browsers and http servers are not yet suitable for providing the rich user interfaces to most users are accustomed and expect. They are, however, getting better, and certainly can meet the minimal need of some users.
The second issue is far more complex. The bottom line is certainly security from the sense of unapproved access and loss.
The benefits of on-line storage/backup, remote access, document sharing, etc. are all available by having your own server, accessible from the Internet, via a secure authentication system. For a non-computer proficient individual this might be a tall order, but almost any public library should be easily able to accomplish it.
The service can even be extended to patrons as an additional link to their library.
The best part is that all of the software for providing these kinds of services is freely available OpenSource. Yes, it takes an investment in learning new technology, but that's an investment that, if not undertaken, simply relegates the library to being outdated, and soon, obsolete.
