Webinar: Maximizing Connections with “Mini” Conferences
Join us on February 17 for Maximizing Local Connections and Resources with “Mini” Conferences, the second in a series of webinars presented in collaboration with REFORMA. In these times of tight budgets and restricted travel, attending national conferences has become impossible for many library staff. Many local and regional agencies are joining forces to coordinate “mini” conferences that provide the means of connecting and collaborating locally, often providing a more focused and meaningful experience for attendees. Since 2005, the Northeast Chapter of REFORMA has joined forces with ALA ethnic caucuses to present a terrific conference where library workers network, exchange ideas and listen to quality speakers. What started as an idea has grown into an annual event embraced by REFORMA, AILA, APALA, BCALA and CALA. Come hear best practices in planning, coordinating and hosting a “mini” conference from your colleagues who have had success in their regions. Webinar presenters include Loida Garcia-Febo, REFORMA president, Tess Tobin, REFORMA’s Northeast Chapter and Haipeng Li and Janice Rice, co-chairs of the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color.

PLA Talk Tables
Those attending this year's Public Library Association annual conference in Portland won't want to miss the opportunity to share and network at these two Talk Table sessions. On Thursday morning, Loida Garcia-Febo will be facilitating Building Community: Online Tools for Spanish Speakers. That afternoon, WebJunction's Jennifer Peterson will be joined by MaryKay Dahlgreen from Oregon State Library to present the findings and recommendations from the Latinos and Library Perceptions Report to guide a discussion on best practices for implementing outreach to Spanish speakers in your library community. Table Talk sessions provide a rich conference opportunity, allowing attendees to bring their own experiences or pressing challenges into an interactive and supportive setting. The latest reviews of Spanish-Language titles in Library Journal for January includes one written by Yolanda Questa, our colleague and curriculum developer for the Spanish Language Outreach Project! Full archives of these helpful reviews cover both children's and adult titles.

America Reads Spanish is a campaign developed by the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade and the Spanish Association of Publishers Guilds to increase the use and comprehension of the Spanish language through the thousands of U.S. libraries, schools and bookstores. Their website includes monthly newsletters; a database of books in Spanish and ARS television; a collection of videos related to Spanish authors, titles and publishers.

Visit the newly created WebJunction group focused on Non-English Materials and Resources to network with other librarians who wish to "discuss issues and share ideas about cataloging and collecting non-English materials."

Your Spanish Language Outreach in Tough Times
As WebJunction enters a fifth year of focus on Spanish Language Outreach, and with libraries playing a key role in their community's economic recovery efforts, we'd like to hear about your current outreach efforts to Spanish-speakers. Are you providing more computer or job skills classes in Spanish? Have you developed new partnerships with other agencies in the community? How are you putting to use the skills learned in your SLO workshop? What new tactics have you developed in these tough times to tackle the needs of your library community? Webinar: Reaching Spanish-speaking Agricultural Communities
Spanish-speakers working in agriculture communities are looking to their libraries and other community technology centers for public access to computers. But like the recent Latinos and Library Perceptions Report confirms, there’s more to be done to reach out to these communities. Join us on November 10, 2 pm Eastern for this free webinar that will present insights from research gathered through interviews with information professionals on perceived use of public access computers by Spanish speakers in rural Washington. The presentation will include real-life examples of library use in these communities as well as the direct results of the outreach efforts of the libraries studied. Special guests include Patricia Rempel, Ph.D., Reference and Collections Librarian at Coutts Education Library, University of Alberta; and José Garcia, Teen and Reference Services Librarian, King County Library System and NW REFORMA Past President.

REFORMA and WebJunction Team Up
Loida Garcia-Febo is certainly not new to WebJunction nor to Spanish-language outreach, but we wanted to take this opportunity to welcome her to the REFORMA presidency and hear a bit about her plans for the coming year:
"As REFORMA president I continue to work with the membership to strengthen REFORMA's position as an advocacy leader. The plan is to work on initiatives to equip library workers with resources to use social media for advocacy, to learn how to develop joint regional conferences and to advocate for the development of programs and services for Spanish speakers. My plan also includes involving students in REFORMA's work and developing a line of work for Latino GLBT and other underserved populations. Together with my REFORMA colleagues, we can!

"I am very happy to announce the first webinar from my presidential initiatives, Using Social Media to Make the Case for Supporting Library Services (see below). This is the first of three webinars to be presented in partnership with WebJunction during 2009-2010. The webinar will help library workers to effectively advocate, and will also promote REFORMA within the library world. Our speakers come from national and international library associations. Webinar: Using Social Media to Make the Case for Supporting Library Services
As Loida mentions, WebJunction and REFORMA are partnering to host a second November webinar focused on how libraries can use social websites to put access to information and libraries on the agenda of community leaders, elected officials, and local and national agencies. The session will be held on November 19, 1-2:30 pm Eastern; it will include background on social websites, how to use social websites for advocacy, successful national and international advocacy efforts by ALA and IFLA, and suggestions on how to advocate for services for Latinos and Spanish speakers. A panel of guest speakers will include Meredith Farkas, Head of Instructional Initiatives at Norwich University; Fiona Bradley, IFLA Programme Coordinator ALP; Max Macias, Serials Technician at Portland Community College; and Loida Garcia-Febo, Assistant Coordinator New Americans Program and Special Services at Queens Library.

Beaufort County Library and Bilingual Marketing
Dennis Adams, Information Services Coordinator at the Beaufort County Library, has shared resources from his library in South Carolina with the SLO Community. His library recently partnered with La Isla, a monthly bilingual magazine published in Hilton Head showcasing articles related to the library and to local history, culture and nature. Two of the articles from the magazine are now posted to WebJunction. First is The Possibilities are Infinite/Infinidad de posibilidades, an article about National Library Card Sign-up Month written by a Latina journalist (Enid Carranza) from the Hispanic perspective for skeptical Spanish speakers. Adams shares, "Our library staff worked extensively with Ms. Carranza on the piece, and I translated the Spanish into the English version. Perhaps other public libraries could use this article as a springboard for media outreach, at any time of the year." It interesting to note that the article points out that libraries are a great help and a place for entertainment in hard economic times. The second bilingual article explores the Local History of the Beaufort community.

Webinar: Bilingual Storytimes to Build Early Literacy
Join your colleagues on July 29 for a free one-hour webinar titled Bilingual Storytimes: Building Early Literacy and Community. Libraries are expanding storytime programming to build early literacy skills in their community. The Mission Branch of the San Francisco Public Library recently added to their popular Bilingual Toddler Tales Program (300–400 attendees!) hands-on literacy activity stations for caregivers to explore. Seattle Public Library has expanded their Summer Reading Program to include bilingual storytimes in Chinese, Vietnamese and Spanish. Both libraries have had great success in their early literacy programming and continue to build deep connections with caregivers in their communities. Join Laura Tarango, children's librarian at the Mission Branch, and Valerie Wonder, immigrant and refugee programs manager at Seattle Public Library, as they describe how they assessed the community’s needs, developed and adapted the programs. They’ll also provide practical steps for you to apply to your outreach and programming efforts.

Latino Perceptions Report Panel at ALA
If you're heading to Chicago, mark your calendar for the panel presentation "Research into Practice: Latino Perception of Public Libraries and Their Public Library Use," to be held on July 11 at 3:30 pm CST. The esteemed panel of presenters include Loida Garcia-Febo, assistant coordinator, New Americans Program and Special Services, Queens Library, and incoming REFORMA president; Kathy Sheppard, development consultant, South Carolina State Library, and South Carolina's SLO coordinator; and Zola Maddison of WebJunction. In partnership with the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute, WebJunction published this national study in September 2008, to understand how Latinos perceive public libraries. The panelists will explore the key findings and recommendations of the study as well demonstrate ways to leverage practical tools for implementing outreach. Whether you're just beginning to implement Spanish language outreach or if you've encountered barriers to your efforts so far, this session is sure to be filled with innovative and practical strategies based on sound research. A summary of this presentation (slides and links to resources) will be posted to WebJunction. Montana SLO Webinar Brings New Resources to WebJunction
May's webinar, Montana Libraries: Spanish Language Outreach Success Stories, was a great success well worth reviewing. Amy Ling (North Valley Public Library), Marie Habener (Dillon Public Library) and Molly Ledermann (Missoula Public Library) presented on their Spanish language outreach efforts and shared practical and repurposable templates. Webinar: Living Libraries, Understanding Diversity
Also mark your calendars for July 22 for another free one-hour webinar, Living Library Project: Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover. The Living Library is a unique event that brings together people who have special interests, beliefs or experiences to share their personal story with members of the community. In this innovative program participants can "check out" Living Books for a personal conversation. Both the Bainbridge Island and Santa Monica Public Libraries executed two successful Living Library events. The Bainbridge Island event covered such diverse experiences as life as a quadriplegic, a female police officer, a young gay man and an atheist. Santa Monica Public Library’s Living Books included a fat activist, a formerly homeless person, an ex-gangmember and a nudist. Join us for a free webinar with leads from these projects: Rebecca Judd from the Bainbridge Island (WA) branch of the Kitsap Regional Library System in Washington, and Julie MacDonald and Rachel Foyt from the Santa Monica Public Library in Santa Monica (CA). Hear how they planned and implemented the project in their libraries, and find out how you can create a Living Library in your community. Críticas Spanish-Language Author and Book Reviews Are Back
In response to reader demand, reviews of Spanish-language books for adults and children will appear on the Library Journal web site. With the support of Baker & Taylor, LJ and SLJ are showing their commitment to providing timely and authoritative reviews of current Spanish-language books. Adult books will be reviewed monthly by the expert reviewers who have covered these books for Críticas, led by former editor Aída Bardales. Children's titles will be reviewed at least every other month by a group of youth services librarians and subject specialists, led by Freda Mosquera, youth services outreach librarian for Broward County Library, FL.

May Webinar on Outreach Success Stories
Join three Montana librarians on May 13 for a free one-hour webinar, featuring real-world examples of successful Spanish Language Outreach. Amy Ling (North Valley Public Library), Marie Habener (Dillon Public Library) and Molly Ledermann (Missoula Public Library) will present the work they have done to sustain the momentum of WebJunction's Spanish Language Outreach project, and discuss their ongoing strategies to assess community needs, make their libraries more welcoming, develop programming, and foster connections with Spanish-speaking communities. Montana librarians became involved with Spanish Language Outreach through participation in workshops in seven Montana communities. Since then, they have used the MTSLO blog to showcase those who continue to provide outreach activities, services and programs for Spanish Speakers in their communities.

Making Conexiones in Kansas—A Report from the Field

At the recent Kansas Library Association/Mountain Plains Library Association Conference in Wichita, Kansas, library staff gathered for the preconference event, Conexiones: Connect with and Serve Latinos in Your Community. The day began with an overview of the key findings from the Latinos and Public Libraries Perceptions report, published by WebJunction in partnership with the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute. We heard inspirational case studies of successful library programs for Latinos. The case studies offered something for everyone—Jane Hatch presented on the overwhelming participation for her Latino Health Fair for a large library system, Christine Peterson demonstrated the benefits for multilingual story telling with puppets, and Cindi Hickey, WJ-Kansas team lead, outlined the achievements of a small library creating a vibrant Hispanic Heritage Celebration. We had lively discussions as we worked through the Spanish Language Outreach resources including Action Planning and Suggested Outreach Activities. We were so fortunate to have Camila Alire, ALA president-elect, join our discussions and provide her additional insights and observations. Her parting words were a reminder to all of us providing outreach to Spanish speakers and immigrant communities: Outreach work is a risk and takes courage! We are taking a risk when we reach out to communities we don’t know, and it takes courage to go against the grain of other community members. But as librarians, our job is to ensure that all of our community has access to the information they need to thrive. We’re lucky to have access to the tools we need to take these risks, and the colleagues who are willing to give us support and courage.

Latino Perceptions Report at ALA
If you're heading to Chicago, mark your calendar for the panel presentation "Research into Practice: Latino Perception of Public Libraries and Their Public Library Use," to be held on July 11 at 3:30 pm CST. The esteemed panel of presenters include Loida Garcia-Febo, assistant coordinator, New Americans Program and Special Services, Queens Library, and incoming REFORMA president; Kathy Sheppard, development consultant, South Carolina State Library, and South Carolina's SLO coordinator; and Zola Maddison of WebJunction. Panelists will share the project overview, methodology, and results. Information about relevant research will also be presented along with best practices for using the research to inform strategic planning, advocacy, and outreach. WebJunction published this national study in September 2008, in partnership with the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute. The objective was to determine how Latinos perceive public libraries to better inform strategic planning and advocacy for library outreach to Latinos.

May Webinar: Feria Internacional del Libro: Getting the Most Out of the Guadalajara Book Fair

Join us for the next one hour Spanish Outreach - In Depth webinar on May 8, 10:00-11:00 AM PT/ 1:00-2:00 PM ET

Are you responsible for choosing Spanish Language materials for your library? If so, Feria Internacional del Libro (FIL), the annual international book fair held in Guadalajara each year, is the place for you! ALA will once again sponsor scholarships to help cover FIL costs (3 nights hotel and $100 toward airfare). Join previous FIL attendee Betty Marcoux and David Unger of ALA’s Free Pass program for a webinar hosted by WebJunction to get all the details: who should go, what to expect when you get there, how to get the most out of it, help with funding the trip, etc.

Trejo Foster Foundation Institute

WebJunction is proud to be one of the sponsors of 2007 Trejo Foster Foundation Institute to be held July 12 – 14 on the campus of the University of Arizona. Librarians, information specialists, health educators and health professionals serving Hispanics and Latinos are invited to register for the this event. The bi-annual Institute brings together leaders, practitioners and students in the library and information fields to discuss and advocate for issues, policies and practices that affect Hispanic Latino communities and individuals.

The 2007 Institute will focus on creating awareness of information resources related to the health issues of Hispanics and Latinos, showcasing best practices in libraries and information centers, and providing librarians, health information specialists and healthcare providers with the knowledge to improve services and health care.

Topics presented over the two-day Institute range from social, historical and cultural influences on the health status of Hispanics in the U.S., to funding sources, research and community outreach. Library staff from around the country who have participated in one of WebJunction’s 250 Spanish Language Outreach Workshops are invited to attend a special follow-up session (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=12898) at the 2007 ALA Annual Conference On Sunday, June 24th, 1:30-3:30 PM in the Washington Convention Center, Room 143B. Guest speaker Yolanda J. Cuesta (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=14197), a trainer and independent consultant with over 25 years of experience specializing in helping libraries serve diverse communities, will offer best practices in marketing to Spanish speakers. Hear examples of successful outreach activities libraries participating in the program are implementing and discuss challenges faced when implementing outreach. Network and learn about valuable resources for outreach and provide input on additional outreach resources WebJunction develops. Library staff who have participated in a Spanish Language Outreach Workshop are encouraged to attend but everyone interested in outreach to Spanish speakers is welcome. WebJunction is co-sponsoring REFORMA's Piñata de Recursos

Diversity Fair Winner
WebJunction is excited to announce the winner of the Spanish Language Outreach Program's first Diversity Fair Scholarship (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=15003)! Sara Peté from the Olympia Timberland Library will receive a scholarship to attend the American Library Association Annual Conference in June and present at the Office of Literacy and Outreach Services Diversity Fair (http://www.ala.org/ala/olos/olosprograms/diversityfair/07divfair.htm) on June 23rd. Peté will highlight her successful ESL Tutoring project for Spanish speakers.

Peté is a library liaison and volunteer for Bookends Literacy Network, which matches volunteer tutors with ESL students in the local community. Olympia Timberland Library partners with Bookends by providing space for classes, class materials, marketing materials, media promotion, and enrollment assistance. Currently the program includes approximately thirty volunteer/tutor pairs in the Olympia area and benefits that Spanish-speaking community by offering free, convenient ESL classes based on the individual needs of students.

WebJunction's scholarship selection committee selected Sara based on the impact of the Bookends Program on the local Spanish-speaking community, the genuine need the program meets in the community, and the collaboration of the Olympia Timberland with a community organization serving Spanish speakers. These ideas are highlighted as essential to successful library outreach in the Spanish Language Outreach Program's workshop curriculum.

Ocean County Library Diversity Cookbook
The Diversity Cookbook (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=17879) is an online database developed by a team of librarians at the Ocean County Library (OCL). It was developed to assist in planning diversity programs, and to share the information with others. OCL first started the Diversity Cookbook as an internal resource but then realized the more input they got from libraries throughout the state, and even the country, the more useful the tool would become. Live event for Spanish language outreach in today's economy
We are all aware of the downturn in the economy, and we are experiencing firsthand its effect on our libraries, our lives, and our communities. WebJunction recently began hosting a series of virtual "Town Halls" on the general subject of tough times, staff training, and now a session focused specifically on how tough times impact Spanish speakers and our outreach efforts to that community. To that end, we invite you to join us on February 10 at 2 pm Eastern / 11 am Pacific for a Town Hall on SLO in Tough Times. This new webinar format is designed to encourage participation from all attendees. Therefore, please come to this one-hour session prepared to ask and answer questions, share stories, brainstorm solutions, and offer practical advice. Bring your challenges and ideas, and we'll tackle them together in the town hall—and in the coming year through additional webinars, resource sharing and learning.

With New Year brings changes to SLO Program
Just after we greeted the new year, we found ourselves expressing profound thanks and saying good-bye to Laura Staley [at left], long-time project manager of the Spanish Language Outreach Program. Before leaving for her new adventures, Laura put the final touches on the final report of the SLO Program and posted it to WebJunction. If you haven't read about the many successful outcomes and experiences of this three-year program, we encourage you to do so. We are so proud of the work that all of the participants did to train, implement, and share their success stories on outreach to the Spanish-speaking community.

However, this report and Laura's departure does not mean the end of the outreach work! Jennifer Peterson [at right], veteran WebJunction staff member who has worked on the SLO program in the past, will be managing the SLO project going forward. You will have a chance to visit with Jennifer during the February 10 SLO Town Hall. You can also contact her via email at petersoj@oclc.org (and be sure to make her your WJ friend!). We look forward to your continuing participation in the project's efforts.

Latinos and Public Library Perceptions Report Now Available
In partnership with the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute, WebJunction surveyed more than 2,860 Latinos in six U.S. states about their library use and perceptions of libraries. The results indicate that 54% percent of the Latino population visited libraries in the past year, and that Latinos hold positive perceptions of libraries. Read the findings plus recommendations for how to increase Latino library use.

Teaching The Redesigned (New) Naturalization Test

Upcoming Webinar: Libraries and the Bilingual Child
Increasingly, public policy dictates that learning instruction for all bilingual learners be conducted in English. Yet 10.4 million children or 20% of all students ages 5-17 speak a Language Other Than English (LOTE) at home. How can librarians honor and respect parents' efforts to keep the home language alive while their child acquires a second language, and why does this matter?

Join us for an informative webinar on this topic presented by Latino Children's Literacy Consultant, Oralia Garza de Cortes. Ms. Cortez is a leading voice for bilingual and multicultural children's literature and literacy, as well as for quality library services for Latino children and families. Webinar participants will gain an understanding of what the research says about how children acquire a second language. Additionally, we will explore ways that libraries can support the bilingual child and his/her family through programs and services that best meet their needs during this critical learning process.

Featured Resource: Siga Adelante
As part of WebJunction's Spanish Language Outreach Program the Oklahoma Department of Libraries (ODL) created a series of workshops for Spanish-speaking patrons. Templates for all the workshop topics (health, citizenship, family literacy, employment, finance, and community/culture) are now available on WebJunction. Spanish Language Outreach Program Impact and Future
The workshop delivery phase of the Spanish Language Outreach (SLO) Program is nearing its official end date. Over the next eighteen months, WebJunction plans to nuture and build the SLO Online Community of Practice on WebJunction. We are currently writing the final evaluation report detailing the outcomes and impact of SLO program - a three year grant program, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to train library staff across the country to do better outreach to Spanish speakers. The full evaluation report will be available next month. Here is a sneak preview of some of highlights:

79% of workshop participants indicated they have implemented new outreach activities or plan to do so in the next six months.

5,472 library staff members trained.

376 workshops delivered in 36 states across the country

158 trainers and coordinators participated in the project and can now serve as subject matter experts in their states.

Join us June 10th to learn about the Pinewoods Library and Learning Center from guest speakers Kathryn Ames, Director of the Athens Regional Library System and Miguel Vicente, Manager of the Pinewoods Library and Learning Center. They will discuss the project design and implementation of this successful multi-year IMLS grant designed to improve the educational level of the immigrants, increase use of library and arts center facilities by the Mexican-American community; and provide opportunities for educational and cultural exchange. Announcing our Diversity Fair Scholarship Winners
Katie Cunningham from the Columbus Metropolitan Library and Miguel Vicente from the Pinewoods Library and Learning Center will attend the Diversity Fair at the American Library Association Annual Conference in June. Cunningham, a past SLO workshop participant, will highlight several successful outreach initiatives to increase programming to Spanish speakers in Columbus, Ohio. Vicente, a former SLO trainer, will describe an ambitious project to open a branch in Athens, Georgia designed to meet the needs of the area’s growing Spanish-speaking population. Round 2 Curriculum Revisions

In response to the valuable feedback and suggestions from participants and trainers of earlier rounds, we have made significant revisions to the Spanish Language Outreach Curriculum, supporting documents and resources. We're especially excited to share a new resource, the Suggested Outreach Activities (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=14020) matrix. Using four modules from the revised curriculum (Reaching Out, Services, Marketing and Planning) this matrix of suggested activities directly links staff to resources that can get them moving on their action plans and to better serving their community's Spanish speakers.

Survival Spanish for Library Staff
