The November 2006 SLO Update highlights Round 2 Curriculum Revisions and Infopeople Survival Spanish for Library Staff.

WebJunction's Spanish Language Outreach Update
November 2006

Round 2 of WebJunction's Spanish Language Outreach Program (http://webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=10555) has begun with workshops to be delivered in 11 states over the next 7 months. Check out the fantastic new cohort of trainers in the Round 2 Trainer Spotlights (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=14197) and look for them in your state and on WebJunction in the months to come! Welcome to all those new to the project. We look forward to hearing from you on (http://webjunction.org/do/UserServices?method=initSelfRegister).

Round 2 Curriculum Revisions

In response to the valuable feedback and suggestions from participants and trainers of earlier rounds, we have made significant revisions to the Spanish Language Outreach Curriculum, supporting documents and resources. Visit the Workshop Materials (http://webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=8122) area to find the revised Workshop Curriculum (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=12355), Workshop Handout Packet (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=12358), and Action Plan Guide (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=12777). We're especially excited to share a new resource, the Suggested Outreach Activities (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=14020) matrix. Using four modules from the revised curriculum (Reaching Out, Services, Marketing and Planning) this matrix of suggested activities directly links staff to resources that can get them moving on their action plans and to better serving their community's Spanish speakers.

November Webinar: Conversation Clubs/Talk Time

The first of our Spanish Outreach - In Depth (http://webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=14186) webinars welcomed Ingrid Betancourt (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=12487#ingrid) who shared rich resources (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=14396) and methods (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=14409) for Developing Spanish Language Collections. Join us next on November 14, 10:00 AM PST/1:00 PM EST for our second webinar: Conversation Clubs/Talk Time - Beyond the ESL Class! Whether it's called Conversation Club, Talk Time, Bilingual Cafe, or something else, these exciting groups are taking place in libraries and moving beyond the ESL class. Panelists will address the why's and how's of running a successful program and their benefits and rewards. The series is hosted by Amy J. Kearns (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=12487#amy) and features experts who work to improve services to Spanish speakers. For more information on the series, visit Spanish Outreach - In Depth (http://webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=14186) where you'll find a schedule of future sessions, Instructions for Joining (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=14184) the online meetings, archives of the sessions, and related resources.

Survival Spanish for Library Staff

We are pleased to announce a valuable resource new to WebJunction, made available by California's Infopeople (http://infopeople.org/). They have shared the written materials and audio files used in Infopeople's Survival Spanish for Librarians (http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=14365) course. Print out the text and download the audio files for a 55 minute course that will equip you with key terms and phrases to help you better communicate with your Spanish-speaking patrons. Find this and other Spanish for Library Staff resources (http://webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=10564) on WebJunction and please share your additional suggestions and comments in the discussion area (http://webjunction.org/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=1156&tstart=15).
