Spanish Language Outreach Program at ALA

Upcoming Webinar: Athens Regional Library Outreach Success Story
Join us June 10th to learn about the Pinewoods Library and Learning Center from guest speakers Kathryn Ames, Director of the Athens Regional Library System and Miguel Vicente, Manager of the Pinewoods Library and Learning Center. They will discuss the project design and implementation of this successful multi-year IMLS grant designed to improve the educational level of the immigrants, increase use of library and arts center facilities by the Mexican-American community; and provide opportunities for educational and cultural exchange. The project won the PLA's 2007 Highsmith Library Innovation Award (http://www.ala.org/ala/pla/plaawards/highsmithlibrary.cfm).

Announcing our Diversity Fair Scholarship Winners
Katie Cunningham from the Columbus Metropolitan Library and Miguel Vicente from the Pinewoods Library and Learning Center will attend the Diversity Fair at the American Library Association Annual Conference in June. Cunningham, a past SLO workshop participant, will highlight several successful outreach initiatives to increase programming to Spanish speakers in Columbus, Ohio. Vicente, a former SLO trainer, will describe an ambitious project to open a branch in Athens, Georgia designed to meet the needs of the area’s growing Spanish-speaking population.
