Workshop Materials - Customize Away!
2:34 PM EDT 10/8/07
Hi Everyone,
One of the coordinators requested a copy of the binder cover we used at the SLO Training Institue. I have attached it here. Feel free to use it and customize it. OOPS - I attached the wrong file! Please see Emily's post below for the correct file.
Emily has posted all the finalized workshop materials here for you to download:http://webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=8122. You will want the first four items on the page.
As you begin making the materials yours, please share your ideas and customizations here!

Hi Laura, I did not see the binder cover when I clicked on October Cover. Did I miss something? Cheers, Marcia Sarnowski

Laura:
Hi! I've been so busy since I've been back at work that I haven't even stopped to thank you and your team for the excellent training and the wonderful hospitality that we received in Seattle. Thank you for everything. It was a wonderful experience!
A question - I have my first training session on November 7 and I've been working with the Power Point curriculum. But where's the version with Yolanda's comments? I need the cheatsheet ASAP!! (You've probably already told me where and I've forgotten.)
Again, thanks for everything. I'm really excited about taking our ROSA (Reaching Out to our Spanish-Speaking Audience) show out on the road. As of today, I've got the community leaders for my panel nailed down which was the part I was most nervous about. So I'm pretty psyched!

Hi Barbara, Here is the link to the workshop ppt, http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=12355.
When I downloaded it, it was automatically in slide sorter view. If you go to View, then switch it to Normal, you should see the trainer notes in the Notes field.
I hope this answers your question.
Cheers, Emily

Hey, Emily!
Thanks for the help yesterday explaining where Yolanda's trainer notes were on the PPt training curriculum. So here's another question for you - Where can I locate that cool slideshow deal that you did for the Round 3 trainers? It was like an automated package that you played for us off of your laptop showing how to sign up for WJ, a bit about how to navigate and where to find some of the best goodies there. I want to run it for my training sessions first and then try to sign everyone up individually for WebJunction before they leave for the day. I don't know if I'll have enough time but that's the preliminary plan.
I hope this makes sense and you know what I'm talking about! Have a good Thursday tomorrow!

Hi Barbara, Good question. I sent last week to all the coordinators of the September institute copies of the DVD that has the WebJunction demo on it. They should be arriving shortly. If you were at the October institute, then you should have already received your copy. It was the DVD we passed out on the last day (Title: Spanish Language Outreach Program: Overview of Online Tools and Resources).
Thanks,' Emily

Hi, Emily:
I located my CD but I've tried all the drives that I can find around here (including asking one of house "techies" to try it on his machine) and I can't get the dadgum thing to play. I'm talking about the "How to sign-on to and use WJ" demo that was included in the October folks' workshop materials. Note that my techie friend had no trouble opening the "Emergency Spanish for Librarians" CD that came from you.
Is there any way that this demo could be put up on the WJ site for downloading?
Thanks for anything you can do to help! I really want to use that demo for my trainings.
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
I am sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with the WJ Demo. Does your computer have a DVD drive? The demo is a DVD. You should also be able to play it on a TV that is hooked up to a DVD player.
Our Development team is working on getting the demo up on the site. They estimate that it will be available on the site next week. The file size is HUGE so they are in the process of putting it on another server. That is about the extend of my technical understanding of the process.
When is your first workshop? How soon do you need the tutorial?
Also if anyone else is encountering problems with the tutorial please let us know! If your DVD has arrived I would strongly encourage everyone to test it out to make sure you are set to go.

Thanks, Laura.
My first workshop is on November 7 but the demo is not a big problem for me by any means - I'm happy to use the PPt slides on "How to Use WJ." (Actually, I would most like to use both - run the demo and then go through the slides with my participants because I think many of us older librarians need a bit of hand-holding where the tech piece is concerned.) But your response is definitely clarifying since I have been trying to run the demo as a CD on my computer rather than as a DVD on a television/DVD setup. (Whoops! I guess that tells you plenty about my level of tech expertise! I am one of the older librarians for sure!)
So, I'll try it at home via TV/DVD and, when you get the demo up and running on the WJ site, just let us all know.
Thanks for all this help. It is so well, . . . helpful!
Barbara

Any word on the WJ demo? Have your folks been successful in uploading it to the WJ site? I took my workshop copy home and tried it on my DVD-player and there was nothing on the disk. I guess it didn't get copied somehow. My state coordinator is sending me another copy but if this demo is up on WJ website, I would like to know.
Thanks. Barbara

Here is the link to the demo: http://data.webjunction.org/wj/demo/SLO_demo_final2_Web_Jcomp.html.
In the next day or two we will have a link from WebJunction that will take you directly too the demo, but for now the link above will get you there.
Depending on your connection speed it make take a few minutes to download.

I'm sheepish to ask about this, but I am searching high and low for the lovely template I remember seeing at one point for a letter to community leader panelists. I looked everywhere I could think on the webjunction site, I checked my email several times, and I just can't seem to locate it. Can someone help me please??
Thanks! Leah

How about a bibliography for distribution at your workshops? I made this one while browsing the West Virginia Library Commission's collection and realized some purchasing was needed in this area. I hope this will be of some use to you. The bibliography is attached. Happy Thanksgiving Holidays. Susan

Well, our first workshop in PA is tomorrow in Berks County. In an effort to put everything in one place for our participants to access, I created a del.icio.us page for our workshops. You can find it at http://del.icio.us/spanishoutreachpa If you are a del.icio.us user, please feel free to help this page grow by adding the tag: spanishoutreach to any materials you find online that can benefit people trying to create outreach to the Latino community. For full details on how this all works, see the document attached. It explains how the page functions and points out key bundles of tags. Will let you all know how it goes... Stephanie Zimmerman (PA)

Hi Stephanie, I've added your del.icio.us page for the workshop to the WebJunction del.icio.us network. If anyone else wants to share their del.icio.us pages, I'll put those in the network as well.
Thanks for sharing!

Hello everyone! Here are my two cents regarding more resources to check on and get ideas for your futures workshops. Brigit Cahalan, from the New York PL and who was on our training in Seattle, graciously sent me the "52 ways to use your library" document. I edited a few things and printed to include it in the participants binder pockets. I thought it was a good way to provide those "key" sentences and phrases for them to be familiarize and for them to share it with library patrons if wanted to. I also think it can be a great piece for an Talk-Time or Intercambio discussions or any new program your starting for latinos in the libraries. The other document is about ideas that were mentioned or discussed in our workshops and that participants showed interest in having more info about them. Lorie Vik make the list and I added other links that have been very useful to me. Finally, I want to suggest the reading of two great articles from AL if you haven't read them yet- "What's a Library Worth?" Sept. edition and "Value & Vision" Nov. Both articles talk about what Yolanda pointed out many times during our training- "get know and listen to your community, build trust with leaders and use them." Reading these confirms me that we're on the right track with our efforts in serving Spanish-speakers in our communities. Wishing all a great Holiday Season and New Year! :-) Lucy Iraola from Oregon
