Program ideas

  • use Google groups to collect knowledge; a safe learning environment where staff can "lurk"
  • Library 2.0 program (13 weeks) with serendipitous approach to use of tools; broke down silos (levels and departments) between staff
  • "Games and Grub": a monthly game day with different themes, using cards, board games, Wii; brings people together to  relate on a new level
  • Facebook for library marketing; many staff have joined and friended each other, which results in more communication between them
  • Technology petting zoo; people getting together to try new gadgets
  • Build new programs based on topics from webinars
  • Sharepoint intranet is an example of a peer-to-peer, viral knowledge sharing

Strategies

  • finding the right tool for the job
  • OR "bootstrap"---try one tool whether or not it's the right tool and test it out; then go to the right tool when you are ready
  • give concrete examples of effective use of tools
  • develop self-pace and self-discipline in staff

Benefits

  • promotes distributed and shared knowledge
  • increases communication, contacts and people resources
  • breaks down silos and promotes communications on new levels
  • increases efficiency and effectiveness
  • everyone becomes a trainer
