Join the October Webinar "Best Small Library in America 2009"
Library Journal's annual Best Small Library in America Award, sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was created in 2005 to encourage and showcase the exemplary work of libraries serving populations under 25,000. This year's winner is Union County Carnegie Library of South Carolina, recognized for its transformation into an "inclusive, modern, service-oriented, community center." Join us October 7 at 2 pm ET for a webinar with Director Nancy Rosenwald, as she describes the strategies and tactics her library applied over the past 3 years that reinvigorated their services to their tiny community in spite of a high unemployment rate and a shoestring budget.
Nancy will be joined by Library Journal's executive editor, Rebecca Miller, who will provide an overview of the nomination process and details for next year's award. You've until November 2 to nominate your favorite U.S. small library. Previous year's award winners are

A Big Step for the Association for Rural & Small Libraries
The Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) has launched a new logo and website! In a recent BlogJunction post, Chrystie Hill shared WebJunction's excitement about this milestone reached by ARSL, an organization with which we have collaborated with over the past two years. We look forward to finding new ways to work with ARSL as we each strive toward the common mission of supporting the needs of small and rural libraries. ARSL's website will serve as a dynamic space that captures the association's personality and mission in a way that is appealing and relevant their members. Congratulations to the ARSL board for their commitment to expanding the organization's reach and response to rural library staff.
And for those involved with the ARSL community, it is with great sadness that we share the passing of Ken Davenport. His commitment to serving and mentoring librarians in Northeast Iowa and throughout the rural United States inspired many. He will certainly be missed.

ARSL Conference Recap All reports from the recent 2009 Association for Small and Rural Libraries Conference in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, were glowing. From formal presentations to informal hikes in the Smoky Mountains, attendees were reminded of the power of their transformative work in rural communities. Everyone came away with a renewed awareness of the rewarding results that come from colleagues sharing innovative solutions to common challenges. WebJunction's Chrystie Hill was there and shared this report following her presentation with George Needham. Special thanks to the many library boards and state library agencies who provided scholarships to those in their state who would not have been able to attend without their support.
