Welcome and tell us about yourself!
Welcome and tell us about yourself!
12:35 PM EST 11/11/05
Now that the RLS project is really getting rolling, I'd like to meet all of you who will be participating in it. Since I can't visit all the small community libraries in the country (maybe when I retire?), I'm asking you to introduce yourselves and give me a glimpse of life at your library.

I'll start.

My name is Betha and I'm the Community Associate here at WebJunction. I get to meet-and-greet people from all over libraryland through the message boards --very cool! I'm the behind the scenes support for your project leaders, Jim and Michelle. I have a passion for small "heart of the community" libraries --maybe I'll get to work in one someday. In the meantime, I will be eagerly following the stories that you all have to tell.

Who's next? emoticon

Hello everyone,
I'm the director of Lovington Public Library. We are a staff of 5.5 and do it all.
Everyone is cross-trained except part-time staff. We maintain our computers with the help of our consortium technician, LPT One software manages our computer printouts and PC Reservation manages our computer log-ons. Our library is not quiet but we do have quiet areas. We do computer training on a as need basis and we do as much outreach as we can. My youth services librarian goes to all the schools, daycares, etc. and I usually hit the organizations, etc. One day I hope to have a hotspot in the library for our laptop users.

Welcome, incredibles! I just looked up the location of the Lovington Public Library in New Mexico and it looks like it totally fits the category of rural. You must have an "incredible" staff to take to cross-training and keep everything operational.

As for the hotspot in your future, you might be interested to read this WJ member's story about Making the case for Wi-Fi to the Board. I love library stories with happy endings. emoticon

I hope we'll hear more about the outreach you do in your community.

Thanks for being the first brave project participant to jump into this conversation. I'd give you a 5-star rating for that! *****

Hello, Our names are vicki and Clai and we work at the North Chatham Free Library in North Chatham New York. Our library is small rural and as most lacking in money and resources. We are at the Necessary conference at the moment, and we keep hearing the same thing. So much work, to little money, network, network, raise money. We are wondering if anyone else has a different take on thinking about this. Is there a way for us to see that our cup is half full and that we just need to re think the traditional way of thinking of "work". Has anyone looked at reallocation of money, to help ease up staff to raise money. What is the ideas from others?

My name is Shae Tetterton and I'm the Director of Collection Management for the South Carolina State Library. I will be participating in the RLS project as a trainer in the upcoming February workshop. Before coming home to South Carolina I worked for an automation vendor as a Trainer and Project Manager. I'm eager to put some of that experience to work with this project. In addition, I'm originally from a small town in South Carolina so I'm thrilled to have the chance to help the rural libraries in my state. I will be attending the workshop with our Director of Library Development Services. She has a long history of working with the public libraries in this state so I can't wait to see what her and I can put together to improve the sustainability of our rural libraries.

My name is Susan White and I am the representative from Georgia that will be going to Seattle in one month. I have been in the library world for over 34 years - some in urban areas and some in rural. I began a new job in September 2005, but before that I was manager of a county library in northern Georgia (the mountain area). One library in a county of 28,000 that served a very diverse population. The mountain area of Georgia is rural so I am very interested in helping these libraries, as well as the very rural farmland of the southern part of the state. I am looking forward to meeting people from the other 14 states when we meet in Seattle in a month.

Hi, I'm Linda Braun. I am an independent educational technology consultant and work with schools, libraries, and other educational organizations to figure out the best ways to integrate technology into programs and services. For thie project I'm working with the state of MA to train and support rural libraries. Before going off on my own I worked in public and special libraries in the northeast and for a regional library system in MA.

Hello Shae and Susan and Linda. Welcome to the conversation!

For those of you who will be coming to Seattle for the training institute, I'll get to greet you in person --always my preference. In the meantime, it's great to get to know something about each of you in this virtual meeting place. It sounds like we have a real power group to implement the RLS program in the coming months.

Hello I'm Krista Griffiths with the Utah State Library. I am new to the library field, receiving my MLS a year ago, and have been working for the Library Program for the Blind and Disabled. My other experiences, as graduate student, have been in government documents and photo archives. Here at the Utah State Library we are undergoing some changes and I have been given the opportunity to expand my horizons and take on this project for the state of Utah. I look forward to meeting all of you in February.

Welcome to all the new subscribers! I think that you will find using WebJunction a great place to discuss the sustainability project. Everyone is reallly helpful and have great ideas that they don't mind sharing.

I recently ran across a book that I think can be of some help when your libraries start working on their projects. You all may already be aware of this particular book but thought I would pass it on anyway.

Helping Business -- The Library's Role in Community Economic Debvelopment: A How To Do It Manual for Public Librarians. Bleiweis, Maxine. 1997. Neal-Schuman Publishers. $55. It is kind of expensive but I find it quite useful for what we plan to do.

Good luck with your projects.

Great to hear from so many of you that are coming to the Institute at the end of February, and thanks Rebecca for your suggested resource. It will be nice to see how the two groups (round one trainers and round two trainers) mingle in this space. So many of our round one trainers have learned a ton already, and I'm excited to see the sharing of ideas, innovation, struggles, etc.

Hi, I'm Ellen Wood from Maine, joining everyone in Seattle at the end of February as one of the trainers. I work at the State Library as the Web Coordinator and am a strong advocate for equal access to information, serving on the government web accessibility committee. Before my current job I was a teacher for 20 years in Upstate New York then moved to Maine, becoming involved with libraries. At one point I was the librarian at a small island community library and experienced many of the issues I see discussed in the forums-lack of money, time, how to advocate.

Instead of a obtaining a library degree I went back to school a few years ago for another master; this time Teaching with Technology and specializing in Web Accessibility. During school online forums were the key way to communicate and we had many discussions on how to help future colleagues and students join in a topic...a topic I see discussed on WebJunction. Now if the spell check would just pick up the words I leave out because I think faster than type, my online comfort zone would be increased!

I'm excited to meet everyone and appreciate the tips and suggestions from those of you in Round 1 as I read this topic and others connected to the Rural Sustainability project.

Hello, My name is Eric Trahan, and I am the Director of the Canajoharie Library and Art Gallery in upstate New York. I know that many people around the country don't believe that any part of New York is rural, but we, along with many other areas of the state, are. We are in a village with a population of 2,200. Our library is a combined library and museum, with a well known art collection. We are in the middle of expanding our facility to serve as more of a community center. I was introduced to this forum through my participation in the New York version of the EqualAccess libraries program of the Libraries for the Future Foundation.

We are doing our 3rd one tomorrow and the rest (3) will be in April, so I will have 3 workshops under my belt and so will Ginny.

I'm Elaine Stanley, the Reference Services Coordinator at the Maine State Library. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you at the meeting in Seattle at the end of the month -- it doesn't seem possible that's just next week ! It will be my second visit to Seattle (previous visit was in summer 2001). I'll be there with Ellen Wood, the web master for the Maine State Library web site and advocate of accessibility for all.

Much of my work time involves training, either of other librarians or the general public. I'm fortunate to have a small computer lab to offer classes in, but I'm also "on the road" in small public and school libraries as well. I'm looking forward to learning more about sustainability issues and sharing what is happening in Maine, but I'm eager to share and learn training tips, as well.

Since I'm "multi-tasking" right now (I'm covering the Reference Desk during a night shift as I write this), I will keep this pretty short.

See you all in a few days !

My name is Michele Leininger and I am the Continuing Education Consultant for the State Library of Iowa and will be in Seattle next week as the Coordinator and Trainer for the Rural Sustainability project. Iowa has 543 public libraries, with the overwhelming majority falling under the "rural" definition, so we are very interested in any programs that can help us help them!

I am looking forward to meeting everyone and hearing all the great ideas that I am sure will come out in our training!

I'm Suzanne Reymer, a statewide technology consultant with the Montana State Library Billings Office. I'll be attending the training next week along with Maggie Meredith my colleague from Helena.

One nice thing about coming from Montana is that you never have to defend your right to participate in anything rural. I work primarily with libraries in south central and south eastern Montana. To give you an idea of what rural means in Montana terms, one of the counties I work with, Garfield county, has a population of 1,218 in an area of 4,668 sq. mi. (slightly smaller than the state of Connecticut). This gives a population density of .3 per sq. mi. To top it off, Garfield county is continuing to lose population - down 4.8% since 2000. Not only is it difficult to sustain public access computing under these circumstances, it's difficult to sustain any kind of library services. If the public library should fail in Jordan (the county seat), the nearest town with a library is Circle, 67 miles away. And McCone county's not in any better shape.

Of course, in the western part of the state we have problems with rapid growth and the difficulties of libraries serving growing and changing communities.

I think we really need to start thinking outside the box in terms of library services. That takes creativity and collaboration. That's why I'm looking forward to the institute in Seattle and our summer RLS workshop in Montana. I hope we can create real and virtual communities that can help inspire and support our remote and isolated colleagues.

I am very excited to be apart of this important project. The Oro Valley Public Library just had there grand re-opening and it was a big hit. The Teen Advisory Board that I assembled a few years ago helped the Architects and Interior Designers create the new Teen Zone. The teens had a lot of fun helping create the new Teen Zone. The teens provided ideas for the carpet, paint, and a/v in this new space.

Hi All!
I'm flying in under the better late than never category - almost literally, since I am heading out from Baltimore tomorrow morning to meet you all!
I am the Continuing Education Coordinator for the Delaware State Library where we are 4.5 weeks away from the go-live date for our statewide integrated library system. Yikes. Obviously, the timing for the R(& S)LS Program is perfect and, frankly, the break will be good.
To provide a little background, our governor, the Honorable Ruth Ann Minner, is incredibly dedicated to our libraries. Now in her second term, we have maintained or increased funding for the last 6 years including an additional $500,000 for technology last year. Also, when our rural/small libraries received their "computer gifts" from the Foundation nearly 2 years ago, she approved funding that replaced any remaining public access computers, as well as, all those in the
NON-rural/small libraries. This enabled us to purchase a single batch! Yes, we do wish she could run again but alas...
See you all at dinner tomorrow night!

Howdy! My name is Patti Lehman, and I am the director of the Antlers Public Library in Antlers, OK. We have only a 1.35 FTE staff, but we are working hard to be a dynamic small rural library. We have 5 public access computers, and a WIFI hub for wireless use. We try to add at least 30 new book titles a month, but we are at maximum shelf capacity. We are starting to make plans for adding on to our current facility.

As director, I have a Masters Degree in Communications and Information Technology, which is not a standard MLS degree. I tend to come at things from a different perspective, which is good sometimes and frustrating others. I rely heavily on the Oklahoma Department of Libraries for support and answers to my many questions, but also have used WebJunction and emails to peer librarians.

My next biggest goal is to start a Friends group to aid in fund raising for a new building.

I attended the Rural Library Sustainability training in Hugo, OK yesterday and came back with many great ideas. Now I'm trying to incorporate those new ideas into my already overburdened todo list.

Thanks Webjunction for providing support and a forum for librarians. The information is great!

Hello, I'm Cherie and I'm from West Virginia. I just finished a class on the
Rural Library Sustainability Project at Stonewall Resort in West Virginia.
It's exciting and a little intimidating trying to come up with a project that will be worthy of
such a challenging project.
At our workshop we brainstormed and came up with so many interesting projects that
it's hard to know which is best.

Does anyone have a method for deciding which area of the seven subject areas to
start? Are you going by library's greatest need first or starting with a nice need-based
low key project that lets you get your teeth into the plan so that you can build your
experience and strengths up first?

Hello everyone. My name is Rebecca Brock and I am the director of the Chapmanville Public Library. I'm currently attending University of Tennessee as a distance education student and pursuing my MLIS degree. I've been director here at Chapmanville since 2003. Before this position, I was employed at the Logan Area Public Library from 1997 to 2002 as library assistant and, for the last two years of employment, acting director.

This would have been posted sooner, but I returned home from the workshop last week to find out that my library had been under lock-down all week (we're attached to a middle school, and the principal and a few teachers had been threatened by some students). Chaos has pretty much reigned, but it's beginning to settle down now. The timing was, as usual, impeccable.

I'm looking forward to starting on my projects and getting some ideas from my staff. I really enjoyed the workshop and hope to create something that will really benefit the library.

Hello all. I am Pam Warden, Supervisor over the Mingo County Public Libraries. We have 4 libraries that are located at Delbarton (which is the main library in Mingo County), Kermit, Matewan and Gilbert. I not only am over the libraries but I also drive our county bookmobile. We mostly serve the outlying grade schools. We also pick up a Christian School, along with some headstart groups.

We only have one person employeed at each of the libraries and we have a part-time worker which serves all the libraries. When I first was employeed with the library system, we had 3 full time employees at the main library and a part-time worker. Each of the branches had their own part-time employee as well. I have been employeed with the library system for the past 22 years and I have been supervisor for the past 20 years.

While attending the meeting at the Stonewall Jackson Lake Resort, I realized one thing and that is we all are having funding problems. We all know the importance of the libraries in each of our communities, but if we don't find a better way of funding the libraries, then I am afraid we are going to be in bad shape. And the sad part about this is, your patrons either won't or don't realize what might happen to the libraries in their communities if we don't come up with the money to operate them on.

Well, sorry for babbling on. Just wanted to say it was a wonderful meeting that I attended, met some wonderful people and we all have one common goal and that is to improve the services of each of our libraries. Catch you guys on the flip side.

Welcome to WebJunction, Dharani Kumar P! emoticon

We are so glad you have found this spot on the Internet, especially if it can be of some help to you and the rural libraries in your region. Did you know that there are 11 other registered WebJunction members from Karnataka state? And many more from other parts of India. I had not been aware of the number of members we have from outside of the US and Canada until I looked at the Member Directory, sorting by State/Province. This is very exciting to me.

To get acquainted with the Rural Library Sustainability program, a good place to start is the main section of articles and events. Get more info about the RLS project from the Project Continuum and the Project Evaluation Plan.

But really, I'd like to hear more about you, to know what similarities and differences you face in the rural libraries in your region. I'm so glad you took the first step toward an exchange of views by posting here in the forum.

In addition, I'd like to do a bit of housekeeping so we don't lose the thread of the conversation here. I hope you don't mind If I consolidate your four posts into one.

Hi everyone, my name is Jerry Schell, and I am the Network Specialist in the IT department at North Country Library System. We provide services to 64 public libraries in northern New York ( I invite you to visit our new Web page at http://www.nclsweb.org for more information on what we do). I recently attended the RLS workshop in Watertown, and I had the opportunity to meet Michelle. We were talking about a couple of new services that IT will be offering to member libraries in the very near future, one of which ties in very nicely with the Outreach area of the continuum. She asked if I would share what we're doing with everyone, which I am more than happy to do. I will post the details in the Outreach section soon.

I am a user of technology and find that it is a wonderful tool, much like my car - it helps me to a destination in great comfort! When my technology is down I call an expert, much like I call my mechanic when my car is operating badly.

As a reading advocate I seek opportunities that support literacy and personally strive to make my family and community better, one reader at a time.

I believe in the power of information and am available to share information about my community via www.sugargrove.lib.il.us or IM SugarGroveInfo

My name is Charlotte "Charlie" Garofalo. I am the library manager of an association library in northern New York state that serves a rural population of 5800 people. I am the only full time staff member. We have three part time clerks. Many of our patrons are spouses of soldiers in the 10th Mountain division stationed in Fort Drum, NY which is approx. 35 mins. from us. It is very gratifying to be able to provide computer access so that the spouses can keep in touch.
I recently attended a Rural Sustainability workshop where we were encouraged to join the discussion groups so here I am. It seems relatively painless so far.

Charlie, I am the branch manager of a small library in Davis, OK. I am the only person here, I don't have any part-time people at all. We just finished our Summer Reading Programs and we had a great time. We had dogs, magicians, puppeteers, and a fellow that made animals from balloons. It was great.

The reason I am writing is that I have a patron, a young man, whose grandfather was in the 10th Mountain Disvision in World War II. He recently went to Italy with a group of soldiers that had been there during the war with his grandfather. He is very interested in that division and the history of that unit. Since I read your message, I will inform him about the 10th Mt. being close to your library there in New York.

I really love being able to "talk" to people all over about what they do in their libraries and what I do in mine. WebJunction is terrific, don't you think?

I am so glad you put the info about the 10th Mt. in your reply.

Have a good day,
Earlene

My name is Hali Taylor, and I am the director of the Shepherdstown Public Library in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Our fast-growing rural area is already a bedroom community for Washington D.C. and we are struggling hard to keep up. Our tiny library, 2,000 sf, sits in the middle of the street with no option for expansion, so we are relying more and more on technology and working with our affiliates and service center to provide the service that our patrons require. I have already found good ideas on WebJunction in various areas of interest - funding is always an issue - and it's great to see what other people have to say about their own situations.

Hi! I'm Shelley Walchak with the Colorado Library Consortium. I'm organizing our continuing education for next year and am wondering how I find out about training from WJ for our rural libraries.
Thanks!

HI, Shelley. I'm Cassandra, CE Coordinator for the NM State Library and WJ New Mexico Team Lead. Are you looking to train the librarians or are you looking for info for the librarians to train patrons? I'm assuming you're looking to train the librarians. What sort of training were you looking for / interested in?

Hello! My name is Charee Cook and I am the director of a public library in a very small community (about 1,800 people). We have four patron computers and a staff computer. The computers are very popular, especially with the children and teenagers. There a many low-income people in our area who cannot afford to have computers in their homes, so these have been a great blessing to our community.

Hi. My name is Lee Ann Barnes and I am the new director and librarian for the Okeene Public Library in Okeene Oklahoma. I am new to this position but not to libraries. I was the high school librarian and the elementary librarian for 20 years. I recently gave up the high school library and my classroom to do just the elementary library. As you can tell most of my experience is in the public school library not the public library( and I thought there was a lot of politics and paperwork in the school library--big mistake).
We have a very nice library here that just needs a push to get itself into a new century and be of greater benefit to the community. I am the staff at the moment with an aid that fill in when I can't be there. But I have a very enthusiastic board that wants great things and is willing to work to get them.
I am very new to WebJunction and to this format but I am learning something new and useful very time. Thanks for listening--LAB

I'm Pam Kenney from The Cundy's Harbor Library in Harpswell, Maine. I have attended a well-run Rural Sustainability workshop and am excited about becoming better informed and more tech savvy through Web Junction. My library is one room, we have 250 patrons (about 35 are active), and have one old very old computer for patron use and one fair-to-middling one that I use. We do offer wi-fi. We'd like to have more (and better) computers for patrons to use, but our current space limitation prohibits their acquisition now. As the only employee, I'd love to be able discuss via this forum the problems unique to tiny libraries with directors of similar ones. At the moment, it's difficult for me to do anything but dream about better technology when I still have to walk to the porta-potty next to my building when nature calls ;-)

Hi,
I am Rebekah Tanner, and have been the director of the Fulton Public Library since January, 2005. It is a mid-sized library with one small branch serving a what might not at first sound like a rural library -- our charter to serve area is the City of Fulton, NY which has a population of just under 12,000 and we get a small amount of funding through the school ballot so also serve the school district which is all-in-all about 26,000 population. However, the total area of the City of Fulton is just 3.8 sq.mi and is surrounded by two very rural towns: Volney & Granby. Our region is described by the NY State Education Dept. in this way:
"The Central New York Region is New York State's agricultural center. The five-county area, which encompasses 3,590 square miles, borders Lake Ontario to the north and embraces the State's heartland."
http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/career/nyteachers_central.htm
We have a 1905 Carnegie building and for the branch are using space donated by the local Catholic Charities, in their building. The City of Fulton has the Oswego River running right through the middle (north / south) so having the branch on the other side of town makes it possible to provide services to children, the elderly and disabled, many of whom live & or work at several facilities on the west side.
We have a total staff of 9 (6 FTE) including the custodian; I and our Youth Service Coordinator are MLS librarians.
Have a look at our Web site at:
http://fultonpubliclibrary.info
If you happen to need some homeschooling resources (a growing trend in rural areas of NY) feel free to go to the "Links" page and grab some ideas off our Homeschooling page.
What else? We were awarded the NEH / ALA "We the People" Bookshelves on Freedom & Becoming American in 2005 & 2006 and have leveraged them to get funds to expand our offerings of public programs, many of which take place at the David E. Vayner Branch Library now that it has been expanded and renovated and went online with our North Country Library System's SIRSI system at the start of 2006.
And if after all that you still want to know more about me you can check out my resume on my personal Website at:

The only bad thing about hearing such rich introductions by all you fascinating folks out there is that I want to be able have more time to sit and have regular cups of tea with you all, visit and glean from you as mentors. Thank you for all your great work and for your commitment to the mission of libraries. And welcome to WebJunction! The community is far richer with your presence and contributions. Thank you!

Hi! I'm Jan Peterson. I am the Director + at the Dunkerton Public Library in Dunkerton, Iowa. I have held this position for nearly 18 years and continue to learn more all the time just to keep up with the changes. We are in the early stages of building a new library to meet our needs. The library is currently in a flood plain and we had over two feet of water in the building in May, 1999. So, it is a must rather than just a desire to relocate. We have just formed our Friends' group and will begin writing grants very soon. The 50th anniversary of the library will be 2007 and we would love to be able to move into a new facility as part of the celebration.

Hi, I'm Virginia Holsten from the Vinton Public Library in Vinton, IA a town of about 5200 people. I have been at the library 22 years and have seen my job change considerably from when I first started. I'm quite comfortable with computers, but the kids all tell me my cell phone is a dinosaur. I want and need to know more about IPods, MP3 players etc. If only there were more hours in the day.

Hi! I'm LaVonne Sternhagen, the director of a small library in the center of Iowa. The town's size is 210, which would be considered "extra tiny" by the lady discussing a library of 2,000. The name of the library is the Beaman Community Memorial Library. I am interested in small libraries' problems and solutions. Hope to get a lot of information from other small anf rural libraries.

Hi Everyone, My name is Stacey Buick and I am the director of the Malvern Public Library in Malvern Iowa, and I attended the Libraries on the Prarie Conference in Omaha Nebraska on July 13. My library has just built a new addition and we have not been automated since the conference and I feel I may have missed a lot. I also have not been the director here for very long, just a little over a year and a half. I look forward to reading more about other libraries. I love implementing ideas into my library and seeing if I can make a difference. One of the new ideas that I took away from the conference was host computer training for our community patrons, first however, the staff and myself need to feel more secure in knowing what we are doing before we can teach others. I also would like to have more children's programs that offer homework help and afterschool projects that they can attend. Anyway, I look forward to talking with you.

My name is Teresa Genovese and I attended the RLS workshop for the Mid-Hudson Library System on May 3rd, 2006. I am a part-time clerk at the Beekman Library and until now have not had much chance to spend time on Webjunction during library hours, although I've taken a couple on-line courses on my own time. I'd like to become more involved, and wonder if other people in the Mid-Hudson in New York are out there on WebJunction. Just wanted to introduce myself for now...

Hi There!
I am Robin Maly, the Branch Manager of the Alpine Public Library in Alpine, Az.
We serve a population of 500 in the winter to around 1000 to 1500, if you stretch it a little bit, in the summertime!
We are what you really call "RURAL"!
I have been at the library now going on 18 years...and it has been so much fun to "grow" with the library! My assistant is Evelyn Williams who has been here for going on 3 years now and is my "partner in crime"! Hahahahahah!
We are now trying to build a new library within the next 4 years...it will be interesting to see how things come along!
We pride ourselves on the programming we "come up with"...the programs are always different and we have patrons who attend them from all over the place...EVEN NEW MEXICO! We are only about 11 miles from the border...I just had to put that in...our programs consist of quilting classes, making cheese classes, beginner and advanced web page classes, an assortment of computer classes, stained glass classes with everything else in between! Of course we have the regular programs like Story Time with our famous Story Lady Janie Heiserman Horak, and a 4 week long Summer Reading Program.
We have 10 computers that are always in perfect running order and that is because I work on them at least once a week! They are scared of me and stay in tip top shape! We are planning to go with all lap tops and wireless internet in the NEAR future!
We also have lots of interesting "visitors" that come by to see us like "Flop" the rabbit and "Tinkerbell" the pigmy goat.
We also have to perform duties that most librarians don't regularly do, like snow plow the parking lot before work...this usually happens in November and lasts until the last of March into April.
The only thing else I have to share is that we always.... and I mean ALWAYS have fun at what we do!
Why work if you can't have FUN!
Hope to be talking with you all soon!

HI, my name is Beth Reitan, from Bottineau, ND. I am the librarian here at our library, Bottineau County Public. We employ a full time director, a full time librarian and a part time bookmobile driver that covers the county. Although I had no plans of working in a library when I was in college, I "fell into" this job, and have loved every minute of it. I hope to someday get my degree in library science, and am thrilled that I have the opportunity to attend the ALA conference in Washington DC in a few weeks! I am looking forward to learning as much as I can and meeting many new friends!

I think there are some schools that are totally online, when you decide to start. You could get your degree while you're still working. Florida State offers an online program, and the Alabama offers one too. There are others. I Googled "MLIS Online" with success.

Use the "more search options" to limit your search to those programs that are 100% Online. There are many!

Help! I'm getting lost in here! Will I find my way out in time to get on the plane to Washington?

It seems like there are so many threads on the Rural Library Sustainability Project....and subthreads! I just found a subthread (I guess that's what you call it) asking for a single word that describes rural libraries in each person's state.

I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to remember who's from where and who I really would like to talk to without printing all the messages...but then, I have to keep up with all the messages, too, because I might miss someone!

Suggestions, please...I just hope I can find my way back to read them!

Hi Sue,
Yes, I know there's a lot going on in here! There is a spot where folks coming to ALA are posting their introductions, so that's probably the best place to focus to learn about those folks. The "single word" topic has been around since the project began, so that includes folks from all over, not necessarily those that are coming to DC.

I do see that Beth Reitan just posted her intro above, so have added that to the ALA intros...

Thanks for recognizing the need for clarification Sue!!

My name is David and I am the assistant director of the Jacksonville Public Library in Jacksonville, Texas.

I am the computer guy by default and sometimes think people assume I know more about computers than I really do. But part of being a librarian is knowing where to find the answers and we can usually sort out minor problems and know when we're in over our heads when large problems arise.

Looking forward to reading other's stories, seeing what we might be able to use ourselves, and sharing what we can to help others.
