A Single Word (about rural libraries in my state)
9:43 PM EDT 8/31/05
Hi - my name is Chrystie and I'm the Community Manager for WJ. I am really excited to see this project taking form - all of you introducing yourselves and gearing up for the first Institute. It's an exciting time for rural libraries, lots of challenges, but lots of opportunities. What an honor that you'll all be together in the same room talking things through...I only wish I could be there too! emoticon

Since I won't get the chance to meet many of you in person, I'll be following along with the project online. I'm excited to learn more from all of you about what's happening in rural libraries - and how we can get together more often to make our work a bit easier ... and then hopefully also serve communities a bit more.

To help kick things off (though Jim & Michelle have done such a fine job already!) I wonder if you all would join me in an easy exercise. If you're inclined - post here a single word that describes something unique or special about your state's rural libraries' role in their community. Just a single word will do. I'll get us started...maybe something like:

Hi, I am Pam from West Virginia. Our libraries in Mingo County are in very rural communities. I noticed at our meeting at the Stonewall Jackson Lake Resort that our libraries aren't the only ones having financial problems. And it seems like its that way all over the United States. If anybody has any ideals on how to improve funding, please let me know.

Hello Pam,

Welcome to the discussion boards! Having visited rural libaries all over the country - I have also noticed that many libraries are looking for new or expanded funding resources.

Here is a new discussion area that includes information on funding for Rural & Small Libraries.

You can also find other content on funding here.

Keep the questions coming! emoticon

My library is the gathering place for folks in our community. Our meeting room is used for birthday parties, anniversary parties, family reunions and oh, yes, city meetings. Even today the city (my little corner of the world) is sponsoring a stroke preventiion for city employees. Without the SRP's the children would be lost in the summer and so would the moms. We love our library in our community. I am a one person library staff. I love our Friends and patrons.

Iam Dharani Kumar Lecturer in dept. LIS from Bangalore (Karnataka State, India). in our state rural community faces so many challenges they are lag behind in knowing the new technological developments, health related issues, educational information. because our rural libraries still practicing traditional method in all the service aspects. our government announces many schemes for the betterment of rural libraries but all of them are in written statements only. its a challenge for rural librarians to strive hard to reach the higher attainment.

with conflict what to do for our rural libraries?
