The Triumph of the Thriller by Patrick Anderson
1:17 PM EDT 5/23/07
Just finished reading The Triumph of the Thriller: How Cops, Crooks, and Cannibals Captured Popular Fiction by Patrick Anderson. Anderson writes a column called Book World for the Washington Post and on Monday's is also their crime reviewer. He explores the changing scene of crime writing in such chapters as Crime Past, American Style, Tough Guys and how these sub-genres have evolved to today's thrillers. Lawyers, spies, dangerous women, detectives, paranormal, literary thrillers, even something called killer clowns are given their due. I found lots to help with readers' advisory, discovered a few new authors and learned a great deal about some old favorites. Mr. Anderson includes a list of his favorite thrillers as well as a mention of the authors he thinks stink! The Triumph of the Thriller is a good introduction to the thriller genre. It is informative, educational, entertaining and a valuable addition to the RA shelf.
