Is there a non-fiction resource like fiction-l?
4:01 PM EDT 8/10/05
Does anyone know of a non-fiction resource like the fiction-l site? A place where you can ask a RA questions for non-fiction. Today I had a patron who was looking for a biography of a doctor who had suffered a coronary and then wrote a book about the experience. The book turned out to be a 1977 edition but I know I read about a new one recently in some journal. This one would help the reader allay their fears after the heart attack. Specifically, the doctor talked about intercourse, eating, exercise, etc. for the male in this situation. Ring a bell with anyone? I really wanted to offer something up to date especially considering the 77' book may not be available.

I've always use Hennepin County's "If You Like" for fiction...but haven't been on their website for awhile. The non-fiction booklists and annotations are really neat! I'd really like to have something like this on my own webpage. Thanks for sharing this and my admiration to Hennepin for providing such excellent resources for their patrons.
This posting would also fit the "resources you cannot live without" topic in the RA discussions. Would you mind if I post it there?

Folks, just spotted a blog posting that indicated handouts from the ALA 2005 summer conference program, "Taking the Guesswork Out of Non-Fiction Readers Advisory," on non-fiction reader's advisory have been posted at the RUSA Readers Advisory Committee page. See the last section, "related files."

Yes, that's true. Fiction-l will take questions about fiction and non-fiction, though the primary focus does tend to be fiction. I have a great deal of respect for the staff of Morton Grove who bring us Fiction-l and also for all the wonderful librarians and library staff who share their expertise everyday.
