Classics

I posted this message in another listserv recently:
I've had the following happen twice in the past week. A patron is looking for a classic and can't find it in the fiction stacks. They are amazed that we do not have any books by these classic authors. Well, of course we do but they are hidden in the 800's. This has prompted us to add signage at the entrance to this aisle that states "Classics Alley" with pictures of some of the greats. I'm curious as to how many of you house the classics with fiction rather than dewey. I got so silly about this that I told one patron that we located all the dead authors in the 800's.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear that many libraries do house the classics in fiction rather than the 800's. These responses will give me fuel to move the classics in the future. I believe this makes a better browsing collection and is more user friendly for our patrons. Would anyone care to chime in and add their thoughts to the discussion?
