More Book Displays
3:17 PM EDT 10/9/06
Please excuse me if I'm posting wrong. I'm new and was trying to post to the book display forum, but there wasn't a button for new topics, so...I was asked to place our motorcycle display on this website. We did three display cases and I have pictures of only two, we had to take down one for a GPS/GIS display. I work at an academic library where Harleys are big. Our display theme was "Make Vroom for Reading!" The motorcycles are made by a local retiree using copper and pecan shells.

Welcome 'magiejpl'! No problem about starting a new topic --we're just glad you found the forum and shared your great book display photos. emoticon

I love the leather jacket wallet --where did you find that?

In the name of housekeeping, I'm going to change the name of this thread to "More book displays" so as to distinguish it from the original topic posted by our Moderator 'saxton.' That thread was getting a bit long and slow to load. For your future reference, you can click the "reply" button in the top right corner of the post, which keeps your reply inside the existing thread. What matters most to me is that you get involved in the discussions --whichever way works for you!

I'd also like to welcome you Magiejp! Thanks for keeping your promise to post the pictures of your Make Vroom For Reading display. Your display is so original and creative. I'll bet those books were in hot demand and I know this display will inspire others. Did you post a list of books used in the display to fiction_l? Please post again.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm happy to be here. :-)

Sorry, I'm unable to tell you where we got the motorcycle jacket notebook. It was a gift to one of the staff.

I'm also sorry that my list of books wasn't the suggestions I got from fiction_L. They had great suggestions, but being an academic library we didn't have the inventory. I wish I had thought of that before I wasted people's time. I was sort of awestruck with the number of actual Harley books we own.

As with many displays, it is after gathering materials that you realize you lack the books to back it up or vice-versa. In this case I had an abundance of materials and lacked the books. So, the long of it, new books are in the works.

I do that too! I gather the props, and oops, find that I do not have enough books to populate the display. I am learning though, that it pays to plan. With a display in mind I'll go over what we own and then purchase some new materials to fill in as needed, trying to keep collection development in mind. I'll put off the display until the materials arrive and are ready to circulate. On occasion, I have even borrowed books through our state reciprocal interlibrary loan program. Still, often as not, my enthusiasm gets the better of me. I look before I leap and have to scramble to keep a display filled. I do like the spontaneity these unplanned ventures provide.

Hope to see more of your creative efforts!

We had the coolest idea turn into the kewlest display! We were handed a theme, "Move Mathematical Mountains" as a promotion for the math department. They called it the QEP or Quality Enhancement Plan, hence QEP @ NWCC background.

This is our one mountain of math books! Now that we know we can do this, we have thought of other uses: christmas tree, wedding cake, pyramid, etc.

Hope someone in the Web Junction community can recreate this in their own library.

You are one creative lady! I love this idea and I can see the possibilites. It would be great to see how others might use this idea. I love your use of background colored cloth to make the display stand out.

Please continue to share your wonderful displays.

In a discussion of book display ideas, one librarian mentioned doing a display of tearjerkers; books that bring tears to your eyes. She had strung a clothesline and hung hankies on it and said this was one of the best displays ever. I knew at some point I would steal the idea and make it my own as I loved the concept. Having discarded all my lacy hankies long ago, I wondered what props I could use to get the idea across. I bought a pretty box of tissues and a 10 pack of personal packs and rounded up some teary books and dvd's and gave the whole to a volunteer to create the display. I just adore what she did with these inexpensive props and imagination, particularly the sign with it's own tissue adorning it (hard to see in the picture). The sign says "Grab a kleenex and read a tearjerker. I could not have done better! What do you think?

Even though I called it stealing emoticon, it's really sharing between those brilliant minds known as librarians and the staff who work in libraries.

I'd love to see or hear about some other displays using inexpensive materials.

I agree that this is a great display. What I love about it is the simplicity and low cost. Who needs specialized or expensive props when a box of kleenex works so well?

You may think deja vu, but no, we reused the Sept 11 display ribbon for this breast cancer awareness display.

This mini book display needs a little something, but I'm not sure what.

Hello Merrill & a hearty Welcome! I've been away on vacation so please excuse the late reply.

Glad you like what you see. Of course sharing is the whole idea of the forum and particulary this topic. Hope you'll continue to join us here and show us your displays as you create them. Looking forward to seeing how you do the tear jerker theme. I borrowed this one from someone else. Their display had a clothesline with hankies. Many ways to say the same thing.

I attended a workshop last Thursday in Farmington, Connecticut. Keeping my promise to myself, I brought along my camera and took a few pictures of book displays. I particularly liked the Children's Room fall display of books, very colorful and welcoming. Having the Cat In the Hat as greeter helped too. The Graphics Novel display must have made a hit as the bottom shelves were empty. And the George Gershwin Display was a nice mixture of multi-media including books, cd and dvd. Farmington librarians had several appealing displays going. Each invited me to take and enjoy a good book!<br><p>

We're almost ready to publish that coffee table book with photos of library book displays! ;)

I'm interested in the graphic novel display, especially in light of http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/11/14/arts/NA_A-E_BKS_US_Banned_Graphic_Novels.php ]ongoing controversies about their appropriateness. I know they are really popular with teens, but I'd like to see more understanding and enthusiasm built up among adults. Wouldn't it be cool to arrange a display of graphic novels that would appeal to grown-ups?
Check out the /forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2993&tstart=0 ]GN & manga topic for some book suggestions. Art Spiegelman's Maus is a classic.

Carol, keep up the great work!

It took me a bit but I finally decided to do a seasonal display of holiday books in December. Stressed for time and wanting a display I could leave up for more than 2 - 3 weeks I decided to keep the display simple using a wooden snowman with the sentiment "Let It Snow". Adding a bit of snowy cloth and books with Christmas, Hanukah, etc. ideas, the display captured the spirit of the season. Ah, but now it's 2007 and time to dismantle that display. Today I will swap out the holiday books for books with a winter theme. Fiction taking place in snowy places, stories of blizzards and avalanches, winter sports, hearty meal cookbooks will round out the "new" display.
Any thoughts on what to add?

Picture errors

Here's a note posted by blg3 in the help section. This was in response to my urgent plea as to where all my pictures had gone. Hope this helps. If not, send me a note or the long address of the flickr photo and I'll try to insert it.

Our behind-the-scenes support guru figured out that (for unexplained reasons --sunspots again?!), it is now necessary to add a space after the equal sign before the first quotation mark in an html anchor tag.

The problem with demonstrating the fix here is that anchor tags automatically turn into links (whether broken or not), so you can't see the syntax. You'll have to mentally insert the symbols to replace the klunky text within parentheses:

--the anchor tag starts with (angle bracket)a href=
--add a space after the equal sign
--then continue with the anchor tag syntax: "http://etcetera

If you're linking to pics on Flickr, there are two places to add the extra space: the example above and after the equal sign in (angle bracket)img src= "http://etcetera.

This was a book display I did for "Take This Job and Read It." I wanted to combine books that help you get a job with books about people's experiences on their jobs. I had hoped that readers would take equally from the resume-type books and they "working tales" type books, which they did. You can find the bibliography of the "working books" on Fiction_L from 2007.

We call this our "Katrina August 29, 2005" display. Here is a list of books: Breach of Faith by Jed Horne, City Adrift by Jenni Bergal, Disaster by Christopher Cooper, Face to Face with Katrina Survivors by Lemuel A Moye, Feet on the Street
by Roy Blout, Jr., The Great Deluge by Douglas Brinkley, Hurricane Katrina by Reginald DesRoches, In KatrinaÂ’s Wake
by Bill McKibben, Katrina: Mississippi Women Remember
by Sally Pfister, Katrinaville Chronicles by David G. Speilman, New Orleans Mon Amour by Andrei Codrescu, Path of Destruction by John McQuaid, and The Strom by Ivor Van Heerden.

It was super easy to make. Unrolled cottonballs and attach them to the fabric without glue or pins. Hairspray afterwards, just in case it decides to sag over night. I only used half a bag or about 50 balls. The cost is one bag of cottonballs! ;) Hope this helps...

And here's our latest display...

Title: Taking Liberties The Novel Lives of Famous People

Lots of fiction with characters that are real, both living and dead. There's lots to choose from and I'm presently compiling a list with the help of the members of fiction_l. The list will be posted in the near future at Fiction_l Booklists but I'm certain you could come up with many titles of your own.

Hadn't a clue what I could find for props so just made a sign and hung it. I'll be interested to see how well this the titles circulate. I'm planning on keeping better track of circ stats for displays this year.

Do you think a title list with or without annotation is a must for displays?<p>

Re: More Book Displays

I love the display, Saxton!

Lots of times I'm way too busy to annotate books, preferring to go with a bookmark. I realize there is usually a summary on the copyright page, but that feels like cheating. The students assume that I have read it and those are my words instead of the publisher's!?!

Yes, it is a lovely display --and one of my favorite topics! With the growing (no pun, really) popularity of neighborhood farmers' markets all over the country, this should be an attention-getter.

I can't see the titles of the books on display, but they look like mostly children's books. How about including adult titles like
Hope's Edge: the next diet for a small planet
or Plenty: one man, one woman, and a raucous year of eating locally?

I'd love to know what is there in your display.
Re: More Book Displays
12:12 AM EDT 9/28/07 as a reply to Betha Gutsche.
Thanks (blush) for the compliments and for the suggestions. Most of the books you can't see (those laying on the bale) are adult. Fifty Acres and a Poodle: A Story of Love, Livestock and Finding Myself on a Farm by Jeanne Marie Laskas circulated right away. There's a book on creating scarecrows, several Storey Guides on raising chickens, sheep, pigs, etc., some fiction like Annie Dunn by Sebastian Barry and Thousand Acres by Jane Hamilton, Clear Springs: A Family Story by Bobbie Ann Mason. Can't quite remember what else but lots of possibilities, including canning, growing vegetables and fruit.
I'd do a more comprehensive list but will be away for the next two weeks. The display will change to a Halloween theme by the time I return!

It is not always easy to find space for a display in our small libraries. What do you think? Show us your "mini" displays and/or creative use of available space to highlight and promote titles in your collection.
Winter Fireplace Display
8:55 PM EDT 8/11/08 as a reply to maggie moran.
After the rousing success of our autumn display centered around a hay bale for Sept., Oct. and Nov. we decided to go for another multi-use backdrop. We came up with a fireplace backdrop that would fit in the knee-hole of our circ desk. I drew the design, our director found the fireplace paper, my dear husband did the work and the staff decorated. We plan to use the resulting fireplace for the months of December, January and February with seasonal books in December, cold stories in January and romantic reads in February.

We have lots of books fitting a horse theme. I created the following display using fiction and non-fiction titles, cd's and dvd's. A helmut, riding pants and boots finish the display. Oh, what I would have done for a saddle.<p>

Here is one of our Christmas displays which deal with books. Easy and affordable, I used a coordinated group of wrapping paper and bags bought as a local school fundraiser. Printed the lettering from Microsoft Publisher then taped to the wrapping paper and proceeded to cut out. I'm a matcher. I wrapped the books then tore the wrapping so the titles could peak through. Whet the reader's appetite.

The original idea came from a Georgia Teachers' website by Sadie Longood, Dallas (Oregon) High School Librarian, saintsadie@yahoo.com the website if you would like to see her display is http://www.clayton.k12.ga.us/edusvc/instruct/bulletinboards/holidaysandseasons.asp

I can remember when you first posted and wondered if you were doing it wrong. All I can say is you are sure doing it right! As always you have come up with a great display idea that is as you stated "easy and affordable"! I would never have thought of this but now that I see it, I can envision my own. Saving this idea for next season. Thank you for providing an explanation of what you did.

I hope everyone takes a moment also, to view Sadie Longwood, Dallas (Oregon) High School Librarian, display pictures at

I found this idea from Bibliobulb on Flickr and modified it for our college library...

Um, yum! All the staff benefitted from this display. We were afraid the chocolate would melt under the lights so a very smart person said we needed to eat the goods and fill the wrappers with cardboard. Oh, one could use Herstory on the bar, too.

Oh Maggie, This is super!
I didn't take pics of my last few displays. You know, sometimes you think, ah, these are not that great.

Going on vacation for two weeks but will try to post a pic of the most recent display based on one I found on this site where a bed was the main focus of the display. We couldn't fit the bed but rigged up a neat facsimile that does the trick. Strewn with romance novels and nice reads, it looks great! We hesitated at using "Take a New Author to Bed" or Booklovers never go to bed alone", so opted for "Curl up and read a good book".

I'm back from vacation and see there's been lots of activity while I was away! I should go on vacation more often.

As always, Maggie, your Chinese New Year display is something. I don't know how you keep coming up with such creative ideas. I love your displays. They are always colorful and your use of inexpensive materials shows you don't need to spend big bucks for eye appeal.

We hung some lanterns and gave out customized fortune cookies for Chinese New Year but didn't do a specific display. Good idea for next year. We must have lots of fiction by Chinese writers, stories that take place in China and of course, there is always non-fiction to flesh out the display.

Thanks for contributing.

The Giving Tree
10:03 AM EDT 9/5/08 as a reply to Carol Kubala.
This is our Shel Silverstein display in honor of the new biography, A Boy Named Shel, by Lisa Rogak. We got The Giving Tree and made these leaves and trunk using Silverstein's tree as a guide. All done on the cheap with paper, black magic marker, and scissors.

I attached the "Snow Better Time to Read" just for ideas...

Carol, I love your bed o'books idea and look forward to seeing the end result! I would have gone with "Take an Author to Bed!"

Wow! It's amazing what you can do with paper and scissors as Maggie always demonstrates. You are one talented lady. This display really highlights Shel and should make his books fly like leaves off the shelf. I love it!

I borrowed the bed idea from this forum (I think) and the captions from the same. I haven't taken a picture of this display but will try to do so before tearing it up this week. On to new displays!

Ok Maggie,

Here's my bed...

I used the carrel as the head board, added a comforter, pillow/sham and ruffle. Due to space and safety concerns we tacked down the spread. I wish I had added batting to the table we used for the bed before tacking down the comforter. Oh well, it made a hit just as it was!

This display was for Teen Tech Week at our Library. Our Library ordered and cataloged a variety of new YA music in preparation for this display. I put out the new music, music books and biographies, and a Teen Tech Survey on the display, which was made to look like a jukebox. We also hung records from the ceiling over the display and at the entrance to our library over the circ desk!

Here's a picture of our latest display - Saxton B.'s Locks of Reading Salon...
This display was easy to create and very low cost. My husband was kind enough to make the mirror from my prototype. Our local beauty school, Brio Academy of Cosmetology, Willimantic , CT provided the mannequin head and beautiful hair-do. We included materials, both adult and children's, with beauty shop operators, and stories that have a strong focus on hair from a list compiled by the members of fiction_l. Add a hairdryer, curling iron, curlers, cape, clips, and other tools of the trade and you have a neat looking display, if I do say so myself! Click on any of the pictures for a larger view...

I was following the fiction_l string not realizing you were the initiator. We have a program for hair technicians and I might be able to borrow props too. What a great idea!

Re: More Book Displays
9:44 AM EDT 4/1/08 as a reply to maggie moran.
I really appreciate the compliment Maggie as I love your displays.

The mirror is made out of a piece of pressboard covered with a silver, mirror like, vinyl. It pays to be junk pickers. We learned a great deal from making the fireplace display. The wings are reinforced with tape on the backside to hold the shape but the vinyl is spray glued to all first and then folded. Not wanting any breakable glass in the display, we used styrofoam balls for the bulbs. They are just two way taped to the display. The tape is strong. Hope it holds up for the time the mirror is up. All of the hair spray and such are empty and sealed to keep our young patrons safe.

I added a couple of thumbnail closeups to better show the detail.
Board? Read!
10:30 AM EDT 9/5/08 as a reply to Carol Kubala.

Super, super easy, cut black and white cardboard strips then weave together with lettering taped on top. We asked staff to bring in board games, but found we had chess and one Monopoly game book. So, we decided to stay in a chess theme with trivia pursuit and scrabble boards to fill in the holes. We brought in the stuff and our page Kyle put the display together. Enjoy!

Whew Maggie, I cannot keep up with you! What a great idea. I particularly like the "play" on words which is a play on words in itself . emoticon This would be perfect for our teen section. I really get a kick out of your displays.

Speaking of play on words, my director thought it might be neat to do a display with the words MAY I. We were thinking of this for the month of May and thought we might use children's books with themes of manners or even the old game Mother May I? You're so good at this....any other thoughts how we might use the word MAY in a display. We were trying to stay away from flowers.

When I clicked on your picture it took me to flickr where I saw another neat idea of yours. I really like the "let your mind grow, read" display. I was thinking of something like this for our knee-hole space, you know the one we used for the fireplace. Can you tell me a bit more about how you created that one?

You can never figure what will happen with displays. This one seems to be staying intact. I thought kids would be running off with things but so far, so good. It is housed in the adult dept. so that probably helps. I can remember a few displays that were constantly being moved around and changed. One was the Reigning Cats and Dogs. The stuffed cats and dog ended up in various places in the library. Another was one that featured diet books. This one had lots of pieces of play food and they would be rearranged all the time. The magic display prompted many aspiring magicians to try out the props but I didn't mind. Thank heavens no one decided to use the tissues in the Tearjerkers display! emoticon

Thank you for your comments about the beauty salon. I am particularly fond of this one. We DO want the books to circulate. This is the main reason for doing the display. I can never figure what will circulate well and what will not. So far the Beauty Display has only been mildly successful as far as circ goes. We threw together a Women's History Display that couldn't stay stocked and the most popular ever is still The Sea Adventures from two summers ago. Sometimes people will ask if they can take a book from the displays which makes me wonder if we should put some signage that states that the books on display can circulate.

Any thoughts on what increases circualtion of materials?
Re: More Book Displays
1:25 PM EDT 4/9/08 as a reply to Carol Kubala.
We've just started using props to draw attention to the displays and this seems to help a lot. This is all one big room so kids are all over and they tend to destroy the displays (parents don't police them well). Due to lack of space, we hang a lot of stuff from the ceiling!

For winter sports we hung a real hockey stick, gloves, and a Wolves T-shirt. On the kids side we usually have some sort of coloring contest or easy crossword puzzle for them to complete and they can win a book.

All of our displays are check-out-able but I have had to put signs on them indicating they should take the books. I did a mini tear jerker display and asked people to fill out a "Sob Rating" sheet to tell me how sad the story was. They got a big kick out of that and those books flew out the door! AND people used the kleenex I put on the display!!
Re: More Book Displays
9:40 AM EDT 4/10/08 as a reply to Merrill Poloian.
We also have limited space for displays and are always looking for creative ways to feature some of our wonderful books that are lost in the stacks. Displays do not have to be large, sometimes a few books and good signage can be all that's needed. I often forget that more is not always better and can be confusing to the senses of our patrons.

Incorporating a survey (sob-story rating) into your display is a good way to get feedback from the public. Wish I had thought of that. It's these little ideas that make this forum so valuable. Though I didn't use this idea for my tearjerker display, I'm certain I can use it in some way in the future.

Also, hanging items from our ceilings is another way to make use of "dead" air. We hung lanterns around our circ desk for Chinese New Year as part of marketing for programs and materials. We loved the look so much that in March we hung 45RPM records to draw attention to a new collection of cd's. These caused quite a bit of comment and helped to get people to look at the new cd's. We took these down recently and the place looks empty. We are thinking up other ways to use the hanging space. Maybe book covers. Have any ideas?
Phantom of the Opera display
4:15 PM EDT 4/7/08 as a reply to maggie moran.
We had a couple tickets to the Phantom of the Opera in Chicago at the end of last year to give away. I made a display with photos from the Phantom web site, ordered fancy masks from Oriental Trading Co. (they were really inexpensive), used some of my own Phantom souvenirs, and ran a trivia contest about the play. We drew 1 name from the correct trivia answers to win the tickets. The display drew a lot of attention.

(I wasn't sure how to get the photos here - I hope this works)

This display is another example that shows what you can do with simple materials and a spark of imagination. Scissors and paper and WOW! Katye did a super job with this one and the grass made by Maggie looks great and seems easy enough to make.

I'm showing this to our staff in hopes we can use the idea in our knee-hole space for summer reading. We are going to create a butterfly that patrons, adults and children alike, can fill in, kind of mosaic style, for each book they read. We thought a meadow with grass and flowers as background would highlight the butterfly. Maggie's idea should help us create our scene.

One of the other things that I forgot to mention about this display is the use of words. Maggie and her team often use the word READ in some way. And isn't this what it's all about...getting patrons to the books and reading! Way to go!

Hi,

My library is in an independent boarding school for grades 9 - 12. We have fun with different displays and ideas, getting inspiration from Flickr, books in our collection, and current events. This display using only blue books came from a display at the Lansing Public Library. What I really liked about this idea was that in pulling by color, we grabbed books that were very serendipitous. It was an odd group but got overlooked and older titles into readers' hands.

We also did this "Orange You Glad You Love to Read?" one:

Thanks for posting these. Here's another fine example that a creative book display does not have to cost a lot of money. I really like the way you pulled together the theme of color and the displayed books. A very neat way to circulate some books that have been hiding in the stacks.

You also mention a good source for inspiration - flickr. I frequently browse the pictures to see what people are doing for displays. Tagging helps on that site and I recently realized that I have not tagged my pics very well.

Hope you will use this topic on webjunction for more ideas and that you'll post again. Welcome!

Finally time to put out some gardening books. I was browsing in a store and saw these cute pin-wheel flowers with butterflies and bugs and couldn't resist buying them. Thought they'd make a cute addition to a quick display using a plastic window box, pair of gloves, the bench and some paper fencing we found awhile back. Our summer children's reading theme will feature bugs so we might be able to use the pin-wheels for that display too. And we've got other plans for them to be announced at a later date!<br>

Here's our latest display called Royal Reading. The display consists of two paper crowns (under a $1.00 each), a poster castle backdrop and lots of books, fiction and non-fiction about kings and queens. I could have added fiction titles with king or queen but had enough based on real royalty to fill the display.
