More Book Displays
3:17 PM EDT 10/9/06
Please excuse me if I'm posting wrong. I'm new and was trying to post to the book display forum, but there wasn't a button for new topics, so...I was asked to place our motorcycle display on this website. We did three display cases and I have pictures of only two, we had to take down one for a GPS/GIS display. I work at an academic library where Harleys are big. Our display theme was "Make Vroom for Reading!" The motorcycles are made by a local retiree using copper and pecan shells.

Welcome 'magiejpl'! No problem about starting a new topic --we're just glad you found the forum and shared your great book display photos. emoticon

I love the leather jacket wallet --where did you find that?

In the name of housekeeping, I'm going to change the name of this thread to "More book displays" so as to distinguish it from the original topic posted by our Moderator 'saxton.' That thread was getting a bit long and slow to load. For your future reference, you can click the "reply" button in the top right corner of the post, which keeps your reply inside the existing thread. What matters most to me is that you get involved in the discussions --whichever way works for you!

I'd also like to welcome you Magiejp! Thanks for keeping your promise to post the pictures of your Make Vroom For Reading display. Your display is so original and creative. I'll bet those books were in hot demand and I know this display will inspire others. Did you post a list of books used in the display to fiction_l? Please post again.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm happy to be here. :-)

Sorry, I'm unable to tell you where we got the motorcycle jacket notebook. It was a gift to one of the staff.

I'm also sorry that my list of books wasn't the suggestions I got from fiction_L. They had great suggestions, but being an academic library we didn't have the inventory. I wish I had thought of that before I wasted people's time. I was sort of awestruck with the number of actual Harley books we own.

As with many displays, it is after gathering materials that you realize you lack the books to back it up or vice-versa. In this case I had an abundance of materials and lacked the books. So, the long of it, new books are in the works.

I do that too! I gather the props, and oops, find that I do not have enough books to populate the display. I am learning though, that it pays to plan. With a display in mind I'll go over what we own and then purchase some new materials to fill in as needed, trying to keep collection development in mind. I'll put off the display until the materials arrive and are ready to circulate. On occasion, I have even borrowed books through our state reciprocal interlibrary loan program. Still, often as not, my enthusiasm gets the better of me. I look before I leap and have to scramble to keep a display filled. I do like the spontaneity these unplanned ventures provide.

Hope to see more of your creative efforts!

We had the coolest idea turn into the kewlest display! We were handed a theme, "Move Mathematical Mountains" as a promotion for the math department. They called it the QEP or Quality Enhancement Plan, hence QEP @ NWCC background.

This is our one mountain of math books! Now that we know we can do this, we have thought of other uses: christmas tree, wedding cake, pyramid, etc.

Hope someone in the Web Junction community can recreate this in their own library.

Maggie,

You are one creative lady! I love this idea and I can see the possibilites. It would be great to see how others might use this idea. I love your use of background colored cloth to make the display stand out.

Please continue to share your wonderful displays.

In a discussion of book display ideas, one librarian mentioned doing a display of tearjerkers; books that bring tears to your eyes. She had strung a clothesline and hung hankies on it and said this was one of the best displays ever. I knew at some point I would steal the idea and make it my own as I loved the concept. Having discarded all my lacy hankies long ago, I wondered what props I could use to get the idea across. I bought a pretty box of tissues and a 10 pack of personal packs and rounded up some teary books and dvd's and gave the whole to a volunteer to create the display. I just adore what she did with these inexpensive props and imagination, particularly the sign with it's own tissue adorning it (hard to see in the picture). The sign says "Grab a kleenex and read a tearjerker. I could not have done better! What do you think?

This is great and I can't wait to steal the idea and make it my own, too! Maggie :-)

I agree that this is a great display. What I love about it is the simplicity and low cost. Who needs specialized or expensive props when a box of kleenex works so well?

Even though I called it stealing emoticon, it's really sharing between those brilliant minds known as librarians and the staff who work in libraries.

I'd love to see or hear about some other displays using inexpensive materials.

I attended a workshop last Thursday in Farmington, Connecticut. Keeping my promise to myself, I brought along my camera and took a few pictures of book displays. I particularly liked the Children's Room fall display of books, very colorful and welcoming. Having the Cat In the Hat as greeter helped too. The Graphics Novel display must have made a hit as the bottom shelves were empty. And the George Gershwin Display was a nice mixture of multi-media including books, cd and dvd. Farmington librarians had several appealing displays going. Each invited me to take and enjoy a good book!

We're almost ready to publish that coffee table book with photos of library book displays! ;)

I'm interested in the graphic novel display, especially in light of http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/11/14/arts/NA_A-E_BKS_US_Banned_Graphic_Novels.php ]ongoing controversies about their appropriateness. I know they are really popular with teens, but I'd like to see more understanding and enthusiasm built up among adults. Wouldn't it be cool to arrange a display of graphic novels that would appeal to grown-ups?
Check out the /forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2993&tstart=0 ]GN & manga topic for some book suggestions. Art Spiegelman's Maus is a classic.

Carol, keep up the great work!

Jean Jakoboski, of the Babcock Public Library, Ashford, Connecticut contributed this picture of a her display for Breast Cancer Awareness Month this past November. She had originally seen the picture of my display and made it her own with pink ribbons and book selections. Thanks for sharing this picture Jean.

It took me a bit but I finally decided to do a seasonal display of holiday books in December. Stressed for time and wanting a display I could leave up for more than 2 - 3 weeks I decided to keep the display simple using a wooden snowman with the sentiment "Let It Snow". Adding a bit of snowy cloth and books with Christmas, Hanukah, etc. ideas, the display captured the spirit of the season. Ah, but now it's 2007 and time to dismantle that display. Today I will swap out the holiday books for books with a winter theme. Fiction taking place in snowy places, stories of blizzards and avalanches, winter sports, hearty meal cookbooks will round out the "new" display.
Any thoughts on what to add?

I have some more displays! The decoys are really hard to see. Next time I will use less greenery! I free handed the "Curl up with a Book" display. Check out my blog, if you are interested in how I made it.
