Photos came through just fine. There are many ways to make your photos viewable on the forums. Read the Posting Primer for some suggestions and if you have questions please ask.

As for the display-it's great! What a neat way to promote the contest to win the tickets. It is colorful, attention grabbing and very creative.

Looking forward to seeing your next display....

This display is another example that shows what you can do with simple materials and a spark of imagination. Scissors and paper and WOW! Katye did a super job with this one and the grass made by Maggie looks great and seems easy enough to make.

I'm showing this to our staff in hopes we can use the idea in our knee-hole space for summer reading. We are going to create a butterfly that patrons, adults and children alike, can fill in, kind of mosaic style, for each book they read. We thought a meadow with grass and flowers as background would highlight the butterfly. Maggie's idea should help us create our scene.

We've just started using props to draw attention to the displays and this seems to help a lot. This is all one big room so kids are all over and they tend to destroy the displays (parents don't police them well). Due to lack of space, we hang a lot of stuff from the ceiling!

For winter sports we hung a real hockey stick, gloves, and a Wolves T-shirt. On the kids side we usually have some sort of coloring contest or easy crossword puzzle for them to complete and they can win a book.

All of our displays are check-out-able but I have had to put signs on them indicating they should take the books. I did a mini tear jerker display and asked people to fill out a "Sob Rating" sheet to tell me how sad the story was. They got a big kick out of that and those books flew out the door! AND people used the kleenex I put on the display!!

Thanks for the positive feedback on the Phantom. That was my favorite so far but I'm a real Phantom fan anyway. It was a lot of fun to set up!

We also have limited space for displays and are always looking for creative ways to feature some of our wonderful books that are lost in the stacks. Displays do not have to be large, sometimes a few books and good signage can be all that's needed. I often forget that more is not always better and can be confusing to the senses of our patrons.

Incorporating a survey (sob-story rating) into your display is a good way to get feedback from the public. Wish I had thought of that. It's these little ideas that make this forum so valuable. Though I didn't use this idea for my tearjerker display, I'm certain I can use it in some way in the future.

Also, hanging items from our ceilings is another way to make use of "dead" air. We hung lanterns around our circ desk for Chinese New Year as part of marketing for programs and materials. We loved the look so much that in March we hung 45RPM records to draw attention to a new collection of cd's. These caused quite a bit of comment and helped to get people to look at the new cd's. We took these down recently and the place looks empty. We are thinking up other ways to use the hanging space. Maybe book covers. Have any ideas?

One of the other things that I forgot to mention about this display is the use of words. Maggie and her team often use the word READ in some way. And isn't this what it's all about...getting patrons to the books and reading! Way to go!

Hi,

My library is in an independent boarding school for grades 9 - 12. We have fun with different displays and ideas, getting inspiration from Flickr, books in our collection, and current events. This display using only blue books came from a display at the Lansing Public Library. What I really liked about this idea was that in pulling by color, we grabbed books that were very serendipitous. It was an odd group but got overlooked and older titles into readers' hands.

We also did this "Orange You Glad You Love to Read?" one:

Thanks for posting these. Here's another fine example that a creative book display does not have to cost a lot of money. I really like the way you pulled together the theme of color and the displayed books. A very neat way to circulate some books that have been hiding in the stacks.

You also mention a good source for inspiration - flickr. I frequently browse the pictures to see what people are doing for displays. Tagging helps on that site and I recently realized that I have not tagged my pics very well.

Hope you will use this topic on webjunction for more ideas and that you'll post again. Welcome!
Spring Plants & Flowers

Finally time to put out some gardening books. I was browsing in a store and saw these cute pin-wheel flowers with butterflies and bugs and couldn't resist buying them. Thought they'd make a cute addition to a quick display using a plastic window box, pair of gloves, the bench and some paper fencing we found awhile back. Our summer children's reading theme will feature bugs so we might be able to use the pin-wheels for that display too. And we've got other plans for them to be announced at a later date!<br>

Here's our latest display called Royal Reading. The display consists of two paper crowns (under a $1.00 each), a poster castle backdrop and lots of books, fiction and non-fiction about kings and queens. I could have added fiction titles with king or queen but had enough based on real royalty to fill the display.
