Steadystate/Vista vs XP ?
11:46 AM EDT 10/11/07
Hello~ We are purchasing new computers in December to replace our Gates computers. I have been corresponding in a Techsoup forum and found out about Steadystate. From what I have read Steadystate is not available for Vista yet. Do you know if there is a time line for its release? Someone recommended that we purchase computers with XP on them instead. I am a little concerned about purchasing computers with an older OS, as we keep them for several years. Our current computers are 6+ years. Is there a similar product to Steadystate that works with Vista? Thanks, Jeanne

According to this post on the LIB-NT listserv, version 2.5 of SteadyState will support Vista and is scheduled to ship in 2Q of 2008.

>You mention version 2 is in the works -- will this version work with Windows Vista? Do you have a timeframe for when we might expect to see version 2 or a Vista version available? Having a tentative idea of this will assist us in planning for future public workstations.
Yes, I can confirm that SteadyState v2.5 will fully support Vista. We expect to release v2.5 in Q1 2008.

As far as other products, I am not aware of any free products that are available, but I assume that the other public computer security products like CybrarN, Deep Freeze, and Fortres, and Centurion Guard support Vista.
Faronics.com says that as of version 6.2, Deep Freeze supports Vista - http://www.faronics.com/html/deepfreeze.asp
Cornerstone by Centurion Guard supports Vista also - http://74.53.73.163/products/compuguardcornerstone/index.php
Both CleanSlate and Fortres 101 6.0 support Vista - http://www.fortresgrand.com/
I cannot find anything on the CybraryN web site or through searches that mentions whether CybraryN works on Vista or plans to support it.
Hope this helps and welcome to WebJunction!

Chris really covered the SteadyState part. One comment I have about your concern with buying XP, is that if I were in your shoes I would consider going ahead and buying XP now, but make sure that the hardware comfortably supports Vista.
The MS software donation program through TechSoup gives you a great advantage in that it makes it affordable to get XP now and then in a year or two, buy Vista licenses through them for very little money, and at a time when you are far less likely to have issues with any application or systems software you are running being compatible.
To me the big headache with Vista is the seemingly slow pace of many other vendors making their software compatible. And even when they do, it is often only the most recent version of the software - not necessarily the one you have.
Anyway, just my 2 cents.
