SteadyState and web mail
11:18 AM EDT 8/16/07
Thank you, Chris, for the instructions on using MS SteadyState. Unfortunately, I had to install SteadyState on an XP workstation several weeks ago before your instructions were posted. I managed to stumble through it and got the computer out for the public at our library. One problem I encountered was that web mail like Hotmail or Yahoo would not display messages. I checked the MS forum and eventually tried removing the feature restriction for "Third Party Extension Buttons" on the Toolbar Options for IE. This seemed to fix the problem. I am not sure if unchecking this feature restriction is going to cause other security problems or not. Is there a better way to get the messages in web mail to display? Just wondering.......

Chris and I have actually been corresponding about this issue, which he had also come across since writing the article. The Third Party Extension Buttons checkbox turns basically off Java and Flash, rendering a large number of web sites unusable. So in general, I would think almost everyone will want this setting to be off (it is turned on by default if you choose the high security option). Our one question about this is wheter it applies to both IE6 and IE7. Which of these are you using?

We will update the article to reflect this and recommend unchecking the option.

FYI - for others reading this, Chris Peters at the WA State Library has recently written a detailed guide for using SteadyState to configure a library public access computer. This is in addition to the general intro article you can access over on the left rail of this page.

I am still using IE 6 on our computers. It sounded like there were some bugs in 7 and using 6 will cause less confusion for some of us older folks!

Kay -

Thanks, that is actually very useful information. Chris had seen the issue with IE7, but wasn't sure if the same thing happened with IE6.
