MS Shared Toolkit and graceful USB unmount
6:12 PM EST 3/30/06
I'm just beginning to delve into the Toolkit, but as I recall this was also a problem with the Gates security software too. But there used to be some kind of workaround. I can't find anything in the documentation, though it does tell how to redirect "My Documents" to a USB drive.

Is there any way to enable the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" system tray icon, under a non-privileged user profile?

I'm getting the error "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I realize that it's (probably) OK to just pull the USB drive out, as long as no files are open. I just would like to make the environment friendlier and more usable.

(Is it bad form to reply to your own post?)

It seems that if you SINGLE left click on the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon, you get a choice of items to gracefully unmount.

Do not double left click. Do not right click.

It's a feature, not a bug.

Just curious as to how your settings are configured. Using the recommended settings as suggested we don't see the system tray at all when logged in as a restricted user. So cannot do a "single" left click on the Unplug icon.
I've just setup our first computer using the toolkit and am slowly working through the handbook, but have not found an option in the Restrict Users section that allows access to the system tray. Since I'm just getting started (have been playing with the toolkit for 3 hours now) I may not have learned enough to figure out how to make the System Tray accessible to be able to use the Uplug Icon. Or if someone has figured out a different workaround for gentle USB release I'd like to hear how you did it.

First, I just want to make sure everyone knows that in Windows XP, you don't really need to use the Unplug icon like you did in Windows 2000. I know that some people like having it because using it ensures that you don't remove the drive while it is still being written to.

But the option your looking for is: "Prevent access to some Windows Explorer features (such as Search)" found under "General Windows XP Restrictions" in the User Restrictions. I know, not the most self explanatory. But having this box checked will, among other things, hide the system tray.
