Library Responses Survey for Project Compass

Dear [first name] [last name],

Last week you received an email message introducing you to Project Compass, an IMLS-funded opportunity for state libraries to work together as they provide direction and resources for public libraries in meeting the needs of the unemployed. A copy of that email letter is attached in case you haven’t had a chance to read it.

You can help Project Compass get started in the right direction by filling out a brief survey of patron needs in your state and library responses to those needs. We estimate it will take about 15-20 minutes to fill out. The survey will be open through November 4.

PDF version of survey is attached.

(If you are not the best person to respond to this survey, please forward this request to the appropriate person in your agency. It is important that a member of your staff complete the survey to ensure representation of your state in the data.)

The survey will collect data about increased patron demands on libraries and responses to those needs from state libraries and local public libraries. Results of the survey and input from other research will generate a profile of needs in each of the 50 states, as well as a collective snapshot of the strength of library responses to tough times. We will publish the research on WebJunction.org as we begin to build an ongoing community of resources for library support work.

Following the survey period, we will hold three online meetings to help us understand and provide context for your responses, in addition to answering your questions. We invite you to join the session most convenient to your schedule. Details for logging in to the meeting will be sent closer to the events.

§  Tuesday, Nov 10, 1:30 PM PST /2:30 PM MST / 3:30 PM CST / 4:30 PM EST

§  Thursday, Nov 12, 11:30 AM PST /12:30 PM MST / 1:30 PM CST / 2:30 PM EST

Following the online meetings, two participants from your state library will be invited to a regional summit next spring to share ideas, exchange knowledge and develop partnerships to foster ongoing collaboration and build workforce development services. Stay tuned for locations and dates!

If you have questions about the survey or any aspect of the project, please contact Betha Gutsche at gutscheb (at) oclc.org.

We appreciate your help!

With kind regards,

Jennifer Pratt, Chief of Library Development, State Library of North Carolina
