The Idea Exchange

Some ideas work one place, some another ... but they can come from anywhere.

Here's a place to throw your ideas against the wall to see what sticks.

For instance ...

Here are three things we'll be doing (hopefully soon!) in Lake Villa (IL):

1) Creating a web accessible community calendar. We've got a volunteer ready and willing to maintain it ... a place where people can go to see what's happening on specific dates in our township. We serve about 35,000 people in (most) of two towns and small parts of four others. Meeting dates are always conflicting ... this will help.

2) Creating an online "volunteer central" service. We want volunteers, of course, but we're willing to share the wealth with other local agencies.

3) Putting local (non-library) event posters and flyers in a rotating online gallery. This is a case of "have lemons, will make lemonade" since there's little room for posters in our building and because American culture ('round here anyway) doesn't support public kiosk posting.

These are three more facets in my "all roads lead through the library" strategy.

I like the idea exchange!

We're planning to bring in an overhauled computer, loaded with Linux Studio, to allow the local teens to create their own music and movies.

Great thread Idea... and great ideas so far!

We do a lot of programming at Princeton Public Library and I have lots of ideas that I have already tried and plan to try.

We have a Socrates Cafe group that meets monthly and it is a great program as it is low maintenance once you get it going. More information can be found online at http://www.socratescafemn.org/

Our Socrates Cafe group is run by volunteers and my role is just to facilitate room reservations and PR. We get anywhere from 15 to 30 people most months (some months close to 40). They brainstorm debate ideas as group, take a vote on which to cover, and then spend 60 minutes debating, etc... When the program started the library staff was a lot more involved, but now that we have a lot of regulars it pretty much runs itself.

Another idea that we tried out recently is doing a Rubik's Cube competition -- we had a huge number of kids come out for this. Apparently it is a very competitive thing these days. We even had the World Cube Association in attendance for record keeping and we set a record that day for solving the cube blindfolded:

Hope others will share...

janieh,

I love the Socrates Cafe idea! I was not aware of this - thanks for the tip! It reminds me of the chapter in the Little House books ("The Rose Years") where the townfolk all turn out for the big entertainment of the season: a debate! Wouldn't it be great if a gathering of people these days could find something better to discuss than the latest round of "American Idol!"
