The HipBone Games

An online friend of mine, Charles Cameron, is the architect of the HipBone Games.

That's as in "the hip bone's connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bone's connected to ... etc."

He's invented a number of games about "connections." His new website (under construction) is here: http://www.beadgaming.com

Anyway, this month (August 2006) we've been collaborating on a project. We've been using a HipBone game to encourage adult reading.

The idea is to find three titles that make a "loop" of ideas. The three we've been using in our advertising are:

Raptors: North American Birds of Prey

which links to ...

Bird Watching, by Larry Bird

which links to ...

The Encyclopedia of Pro Basketball

which links back to the original title because the Toronto Raptors are a professional basketball team.

This is one of those contests where there is no right answer ... adult services staff will judge entries on creativity (and surprise).

This isn't fun for everyone, but if you've a clientel that likes puns and obscure relationships it's a great conversation starter.

"We call them "HipBone Games" because of the old song, 'the hip-bone connected to the thigh-bone'."

This whole project looks fascinating, but I have to admit that I don't quite get how to implement it at your library or how to participate. Can you fill us in on how it's working for you?

There's a "play sheet" -- basically spaces for title/author/explanation that link together rather like the standard recycling sign (w/o the moebius twist).

I must confess that we got few players. I think the signage and explanation were clear enough ... but it also required a bit more thought than most people would want to employ. Our winner, however, found a cycle based on Goethe's works.

(No, I don't recall it as of this writing. It *was* a tad abstruse and I *am* a tad obtuse.)

Oh well ... we may pull it out again next August, an otherwise empty time in out "adult programming" cycle.

I figure that even failures are useful. If you don't fling lots of stuff at the wall you won't know what sticks. ;-)

I love this idea. It might catch on better next time around and since it is such a low cost/ low effort program to run it doesn't hurt to put it out there.

In fact, I think I might use this during NLW in the Spring. I somehow sense that the people in my community would get a kick out of this.

Thanks for sharing.
