Deployment Support
12:48 PM EST 11/1/05
We are wanting to create some programming/displays/resources for military families who are dealing with deployments. We have already purchased some children's books dealing with the subject as well as info/colorinig books/etc. We provide a service in which we will videotape the parents as they read books aloud and give the tape to the family so that when the parent is gone - the child has a video of "Daddy (or Mommy) reading to them." That has been a big hit...

Does anyone have any other resources/webpages/etc that might be good to use in a "Deployment Corner" or a pamphlet entitled "surviving deployment"....

Thanks!

It sounds like a wonderful program that you are initiating. I do not have resources to share at the moment, but I have some friends that I will contact for suggestions.

Operation Home Front has some resources for kids (IL military family relief fund put these together). I didn't dig too deep here, but it looks like there are some nice resources for kids and young people dealing with military separation.

Would love to hear if anyone has developed library programs/services/pathfinders in this area that we could all use.

We're thinking about buying (actually, thinking about convincing the Friends to buy) a video VOIP station. It's basically a more-or-less dedicated computer/camera unit that's "plug and play" once you've assigned it a static IP address on your internal net.

There seem to be quite a few of these on board ships and in theater.

We've got a lot of Navy and retired Navy in our district ... the Great Lakes Training Center is only a few miles away.

We're thinking of advertising this through churches, etc., who may have members overseas ... plus with the VFW, etc. This last, often a bastion of anti-tax old coots (IMHO), really needs to see that the library is doing something for them. I see this as a marketing tool as well as handy bit of "continuous" programming.
