Does anyone have experience in training staff about CIPA and/or the use of filters?

Hi,
I haven't had experience in CIPA staff training, but I think the topic was brought up over in the fundraising forum - Maybe Max, the fundraising host, will be able to share some tips. I'll "ping" him

Hi,
Brenda is right, lately I do have some experience with this! I created a new workshop for SOLINET after the Supreme Court ruling on CIPA last summer. So far it's been well attended. (25-30 at a session). I have taught this workshop to librarians in North Carolina so far and will be taking it all over the state of Tennessee in April. There are also many state which are offering training. (I can think of WA state as an example)
I start with where we've been (talking about the history of the law) and where we are now (what was the outcome of the ruling.) This tends to open up a lot of discussion. I talk about the specifics of the ruling (when it does and does not apply). We discuss policy changes that might be needed (or the creation of one if they don't have one at all). We look at what are the alternatives if the library finds it doesn't have to filter, and then finally we look at evaluating filtering software. I do not do a live demo in the field, it's just not worked out. If you have more specific quetions, I would be happy to answer them!

Great question, nrthomas. Thanks for joining the discussions on All Aboard! This is an area ripe for information sharing. No sense in re-inventing the wheel! Let me poke around and see what I can find.

Of course, you should check out WebJunction's CIPA resources which includes an article about WA state's CIPA training materials (it's a PDF so you have to click on "download the original").
Hope this helps. Enjoy!

I second that. I used a lot of WJ materials and ALA materials when I was trying to decipher what was required for libraries that were CIPA-compliant. They were extremely valuable, especially the article written by Bob Bocher and Mary Minow about issues faced by decision makers which you will find in the CIPA area of WJ.

Infopeople did a three part series on Filtering which covers some of the technology associated with filtering and then the issues that come into play once you get into implementation.
These webcasts are free to view are are available on Infopeople's webcast archive page: http://infopeople.org/training/webcasts/archived.html
