Hi. I'm in the same boat. I've been job hunting for a long time and also can't get my foot in the door. I would be interested in getting feedback.

Hi Renee! You are definitely not alone. I think that part of the problem is that the plentitude of jobs that was advertised to lure many of us into library school just have not materialized --at least not in the public sector.

Have you seen Rachel Singer Gordon's new book The Nextgen Librarian's Survival Guide? I don't know if you fall into that category, but it llooks like the book is appropriate for anyone new to the profession. There is a chapter on "Surviving the Job Hunt."

Best of Luck!! And let us know how things go. emoticon

For me, when I was a new grad, the key was flexibility and a willingness to relocate. I know that not everyone has the luxury to relocate, but if it is possible you might want to consider broadening the scope of your job search.

Also, about 2 months before I graduated, I went to the ALA annual conference and spent the entire 3 days in the placement center. I had about 2 dozen interviews with libraries of all sizes and types... within 3 weeks I had 6 solid job offers and I ended up accepting one.

2 years later when I was ready for a different position, I went back to ALA and again spent 3 days interviewing ... and once more I had several job offers and that is how I ended up at my current position.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Renee
What is your background? Which part the USA are you from?
While you are waiting for the most appropriate job try some of the Webjunction online classes. I have had a couple of people do that and fill the lacuna in their CV.
Even if it is not a job at a library... look for jobs where you can use the skills that the degree gave you.... often times that maybe working for libraries with a non-profit or a tech-related company.
I would love to hear from you....
