Library IT Job Descriptions and Salary Issues
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04
Hi! Our Library is a department of our City, which is getting ready to conduct a salary and compensation review later this spring. My job has been targeted as one of those to be reviewed for possible reclassification. While I work full-time for our Library, I also work very closely with the City IT department. My title is Library Information Systems Specialist. I would like to gather as many "Library" IT type job descriptions as possible to help facilitate my classification review. I know that tech support runs the gamut in Libraries, ranging from whoever is the most savy on that day, to full-blown IT professionals. Anyone out there interested in sharing info with me?

I am hoping that this posting will start a flood of discussion about IT jobs in Libraries and issues regarding those positions.

Thanks!

Hi Deb,
Welcome to the technology planning forum! I think this is an interesting question and I also hope it results in a flood of postings.

I'm looking forward to seeing other responses to this, too.

We are also a City department, and reclassification has been attempted, forgotten, discussed again - I'm not sure where we are in the process now!

I am called Technology Assistant, and only have 30 hours/week in this position. We have 2 city IT guys who have taken on a lot of the technology responsibilities (they have taken over all the networking, internet access and now are responsible for all equipment purchases for us as well). I appreciate having them available, since I can deal with the minor hardware and software issues but network problems were beyond me. They are incredibly busy with the entire city, so we try to handle as much as possible ourselves before calling them.

I can certainly send along a job description if you're interested.

Hi Pam,

Yes, I'd like to get a copy of your job description. And will send you mine if you would like to see it.

My position is 40hr full-time. I basically handle all the hardware and software issues that come up in our Library for 3 networks. Our public network, our private staff network and our ALS network. I do all the upgrades, rollouts, and routine server maintenance. Along with teaching a few classes for the public. And keep our staff trained on new software and harware. I'm also our WebTech, something I've just learned by the seat of my britches in the last year. I don't call myself a Web Master, not yet anyway, just a WebTech!) The City IT department handles anything that I can't and does most of the firewall and network management. I am currently working on my Network+ certification, but am by means a Network guru. Thanks for posting a reply, I look forward to seeing your job description!

Deb and all: you might want to check out this article about demonstrating professional value.

Also, ALA has a publication "Developing a Compensation Plan for your Library" that you might want to check into, for sale at the ALA store www.alastore.ala.org

Hi Pam & Deb,

I'm curious -- are your backgrounds in computers or in libraries?

I wonder if there are studies that show that "librarians with technical responsibilities" make less $$ than "IT specialists who work in libraries".

The answer to the background question: I have my MLIS, and have learned computers through classes, and OJT. When I took my present Technology position, I negotiated a salary comparable to the professional staff, but I don't think it is at all similar to what an IT professional would make.

Yes, Deb, I will work on getting you my job description.

I have an IT staff of 14 right now, and have three open positions that are currently advertised. With one exception, all my staff come from the IT world rather than the library world. Our City has an IT department, but ours is autonomous from the City's (although we do cooperate on some projects). Our positions are developed by patterning them after similar positions in the City, but adding library-specific requirements. We also do a wage comparison for every new position that is created so we can attract good people and be competitive in the current market. I can email our current job descriptions to whoever whould like them. The classification titles are: User Support Manager (supportdesk and desktop team); Systems Support Manager (enterprise applications and servers); Supportdesk Analyst; IT Operations Assistant (clerical support); PC and Network Technician; Senior PC and Network Technician; Information Technology Specialist; Senior Information Technology Specialist; Systems Analyst; and Senior Systems Analyst. Witht the exception of the Managers, I have several people in each classification, but each of them does different primary tasks.

My background is Library first, & Technology as an afterthought. I was a Library Assistant for 12 years and during that time I discovered a real knack for things computer related and became the "go to person" for computer problems in our Library. Almost 3 years ago the Library budgeted for a full-time IT position and I was selected to fill the spot.

I do not have a degree in either field, but am working on several certifications. I still enjoy working 6-8 hrs a week on the Circulation Desk, as many of my favorite patrons thought I had left because I'm always down in the server room working!
