DVD not filling up DVD-RW media

I am not sure I am posting this to the correct category...if not please move as needed. Our DVD drive shows our DVD-RW media is full and shows insufficient space to burn a backup. The DVD-RW only has 1.16 GB on it and the media holds 4.7GB.
I am using Back-up Now 3 software to automatically burn a backup in the middle of the night on our Content Server using Win 2000. The software program sees the DVD-RW only has 1.16 GB burned to it with 3.5 GB free, but the drive says it is full.
Is there a setting on the Toshiba SD-R5272 that I need to change to accept a 4.7 GB media? What's stopping it at 1.16 GB when there is so much more space available?

Sounds like software more than hardware.
Is it that there is alreadu 1.16 GB on the disk and you are trying to add to that? Or is it that it stopped the burn at 1.16, saying it is full?
If the former, I would guess that the software is completing the disk at the end of the first backup, so that you can't add on (though you should be able to erase the disk).
The other things to look at are the Backup software updates and drivers - make sure you have the latest. And also you might try different media from another manufacturer.

There is already 1.16 GB on the disk when it was scheduled to do the next backup, that's when the error message came up that there was insufficient space to do the next back up of 412 MB. Backup is set to append.
I have checked for updates and what I have is the most current. These are daily backup - I use 7 different DVDs for two months and then change them. I started this program 3 weeks ago so, each DVD has three backups on them and this would be the fourth.
The model of DVD is approved for use with the Backup NOW 3 software and I am using TDK 4x DVD+RWs.
Any other suggestions? I realize I can erase the recorded data, but I don't understand why it only records 1.16 GB on a 4.7 GB media.

Have you tried one of the other disks to make sure it's not just something about this disk?
And have you tried manually burning more on to this disk using other burning software? Or burn more than 1.16 GB onto a blank disk?

Sure enough, the backup the next night went fine and burned the fourth backup fine. I went ahead and erased the problem disk. It just might have been a faulty disk. I'll check each night's backup and make sure it is burning ok. I'll consider this question answered then. Thanks for your continued assistance, Dale.
