Quick Guides
3:03 PM EDT 6/20/04
I'm creating a class for librarians on how to make Quick Guides. These will be one page informational sheets, for example: Excel Tips, How to Get an E-Mail Account, Search Engines, etc. Does anyone have samples that are online they could share? Also, are the Gates Foundation Quick Guides available for download? I couldn't find them on WJ. Thanks!

Hi Stephanie -- Liz Kellison, Content Manager of WJ here. We are working on a way to post the Quick Guides from the Foundation as soon as we can, but unfortunately they are in a format we do not yet support. [Hint: hopefully we will be able to post them in our next version, due out in early May!]

In the meantime, I would encourage you to look for handouts we already have up on the site that might be helpful to your collection. You can do a search by topic, or just browse through WJ and look in the areas that you are hoping to include in your collection. Also, there are lots of lessons in the Learning Center, both in Learning Resources and the Training Strategies area, that could be of use as well. Good luck! Email me at content@webjunction.org if you want further help or suggestions. I am always full of suggestions....

Here are some links to some Quick Guides that are online. Some of them are longer than one page, but they still might give you some ideas. I have done Quick Guides in the past and found that I often needed to make them be double-sided on one sheet of paper.Trying to keep a guide to one single page often means that it is overcrowded and difficult to read (IMO). Okay, so here are a few links that may help you out:

Search Engines:

Metadata:

Excel (this one is 4 pages, but has some good ideas):

Some of the Quick Guides that I created while I was an academic librarian are still up on the HWS site (largely unchanged too, which is flattering):

Finding Articles:

Finding Film Reviews:

Hope this helps... I would love to see other Quick Guides that have been created by the WebJunction community!

And here is a link to our Quick Guides for our XP models.

Just a warning about all of these, while some are generic and may apply to other computers you have, some are specific to the GLCs, so look them over carefully before you use them.

Stephanie-
If you want to email me, I could send you some of ours. Libraries receiving grants should have received a Publications CD that has the Quick Guides, but that was a long time ago for New Mexico, and our later ones are better anyhow.
Email me at Support at gatesfoundation.org put Attn: Dale in the subject.

Thanks Dale, this is great! I just asked Lizk to check and see if she could do the same thing. I'll tell her you have them and that folks will contact you if they want them by email.

Actually, just had a better idea. I just put them into a folder at pacomputing. There is no web page, just a list of files. These are all pdf's and anyone is free to use them for any non-profit use. You can get them at:

These links had to be redirected after PAComputing was integrated with WJ. They are now assembled all on one page here:

Dale, thanks so much for your attention here. This is really helpful, as always.

Dale:
These QuickGuides are wonderful! In fact, I plan on using the Internet Explorer 6.0 Guide for the new course I am developing! Thanks for making these available.
