Does any one of you have any ideas for Bilingual or Spanish Computer Training in Public Libraries. I would like to implement some new classes and know what you have done. Do's and dont's.
Thanks

Hola!
I attended a few of the Seattle Public Library's computer classes in Spanish. They were great and seemed to be well-attended.
The SOL: Spanish in our Libraries web site is really useful, too. http://www.sol-plus.net/
And, of course, REFORMA is a good resource. http://www.reforma.org/
Good luck!

Welcome to the forum... this is a good topic and I hope we can both gain some insight on this...
We have offered classes in Spanish, but we often found it difficult to fill them. We are not sure why this happened and will be looking at more aggressive and more focussed marketing once we move in to our new building this spring.
We did Computer Basics and Internet Intro in Spanish. Thelibrarians who taught them are both fluently bilingual (in fact, they both have Spanish as their first language).

I am actually looking for Spanish-language online courses to add to the WJ Learning Center, so if anyone knows of good resources, please let me know!

This Monday, I was at a meeting which featured speakers from Harper Community College (Cook County, IL), not sure which town. Anyway, they were talking about the course they've developed in libraries using "Command Spanish." This is a limited set ot phrases useful in particular settings. You might want to contact them ... there is, apparently, a national association.

Has anyone created a handout with basic Internet terminology, definitions, etc. that is written in Spanish? If so, would you mind sharing? I would like to have something like this available in our new training lab as a handout and would be curious to see what others have done. Thanks!!

Two other items:
I know we have a potential community editor who has expressed interest in spanish language materials at WJ. If anyone else is interested in that, let me know.
Also, the Colorado State Library used their most recent training grant from the Gates Foundation to develop a training *for librarians* about Spanish speaking patrons. It's wonderful. Contact Rose Nelson (from the member directory) for details.

Thanks for the great tips and leads everyone. I will follow through with them. What I was really hoping to unearth, however, was a handout that would define in spanish technology and computer phrases... perhaps something visual that shows the parts of a computer, etc.. Anyone have anything like that?

Hello everyone,
I know this thread started last year, but I wanted to let you know about resources for Spanish speaking patrons that we have created with our Gates training grant dollars. The web site is www.cde.state.co.us/gates; We have course documents on teaching computer classes in Spanish. The content is actually in Spanish. We also have links to tutorials, and other Spanish resources on the web. Please let me know if you have questions/comments about any of the resources.
Hope this can be useful to some of you.
Rose

Hi there. I'm Erin Peak and I'm a new member of the Education team. I'm coordinating our pilot program for outreach to Spanish speakers. Our goal is to develop a comprehensive online resource to address your question specifically - complete with resources, case studies and curriculum. Check out the following article for details and stay tuned as we launch our program-specific message boards in the next week. You'll be able to track our progress and see what we're learning as we go.
