WJ Learning Center - for patrons?
3:03 PM EDT 6/20/04
I'm most interested in the Learning Center on WebJunction. Has anyone taken any of the classes? Any recommendations for especially good courses that I should start with?

Hi Kathy --- Liz Kellison here, Content Manager for WebJunction. You can try out all sorts of online courses in the Learning Center, from basic application courses (how to use Word, Excel, Encarta, etc) to courses on how to better use the Internet in your library work. There are more advanced courses as well, in subjects like HTML and XML for more advanced users. The other great thing about the Learning Center is that there are lots of resources for your trainers and library staff to use in technology classes with patrons and staff members. Let me know what you think! You can email me at: content@webjunction.org.

so, does that mean there are no copyright issues if i want to use these courses as curriculum in our own technology classes for patrons?

Kathy,

Sorry so long in getting to your question! I think it got lost in the shuffle.

Here's the party line on this (from FAQs in the upper right hand corner of the site border): "WebJunction exists to support the staff that sustain public access to information and technology, and we encourage your feedback as to how we may help you roll-out programs to your patrons. However, we prefer that the WebJunction training remain focused on your staff."

There are no technical barriers, however, to *anybody* signing up at the site to use the courses, and they are currently offered at no cost to WJ members. It's worth noting that the individual courses are each launched at some cost to the community as a whole (they are not cost-free to the group) and so it's really in our best interest to try and make the best or most appropriate use of the resources we have available to us here.
