Workshop Description

With the advent of changes necessary to become effective learners in the 21st Century, the American Association of School Librarians have rewritten the national standards and guidelines for school library programs. With these tools, school librarians need to renew, retool and refresh their programs. The four tools are: Empowering Learners: A Planning Guide for School Library Programs, Planning Guide for Empowering Learners With School Library Assessment Rubric, Standards for the 21st Century Learner, and Standards for the 21st Century Learner in Action.

Participants of this workshop will examine these tools with regard to:
1. Increasing student achievement
2. Evaluating the library program
3. Advocating the library program

Participants can earn up to 3 hours of Act 48 professional development that will be awarded after attending one of the face-to-face workshops sponsored by a trained facilitator.

Participants will examine these tools as resources to:

• Design a curriculum that address the skills, resources and tools or the 21st century learner to think, create, share, and grow.

• Establish effective school library programs in the 21st-century.

• Evaluate the school library program

Workshop Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. Define the characteristics of 21st-century researcher within the new learning environments.

2. Articulate the skills, dispositions in action, responsibilities, and self-assessment strategies to equip students for the 21st-century.

3. Explain the components of quality school library program.

4. Discuss the advantages of utilizing online planning tools to evaluate the school library program.
