Instructions for upgrading Gates 2000 to XP?
2:24 PM EST 12/10/07
I just spent 45 minutes looking around the website and forum for the instructions on how to upgrade a Gates 2000 machine (for Utah) to XP.
Our library was granted 4 Gates and we purchased one more. For some reason, when the upgrades came around, only the 4 granted machines were upgraded to XP. I don't think it was a matter of licensing, but a matter of convenience at the time that the non-granted machine was left out. So now the one with Windows 2000 needs to finally be upgraded to XP. I have the binder with the upgrade CDs, but not the instructions.
I can find instructions for upgrading NT to XP, but not 2000 to XP. Anyone know where these instructions are?

Unfortunately these were never posted on the site. The original instructions were a soft bound, 8 1/2 x 11 booklet of under 100 pages.
But if you have good general computer skills and are familiar with the Gates Computers, this is actually pretty straightforward. Most of the instructions are just waling you through collecting existing settings, and then reentering them afterwards.
First, in the binder, you should see a 5 DVD Software Upgrade set. These are the only discs you need to use. They contain a complete drive image that includes all the applications, profiles and security. All you need to do is to boot to the first DVD and follow the instructions. You will swap out DVDs when prompted (about 30 40 minutes) until all 5 are done.
Things to be aware of: - BIOS: you need to change the boot order, and BIOS should be password protected, if you don't know it let me know. - Exec password: will 'exec' the first time you log in after reimaging. - Network Settings: you will need to reenter your network settings. After reimage it will be set to a dummy static IP address. - Printer: you will also need to change the port address for the printer if you are still using the original HP printer (or of course install any others) - Any other configuration changes - keep in mind that any software or settings that have been added by your library will be wiped out, so look around in the PC before imaging to see what's there. The base image does not include any antivirus or other security software beyond the PAC system.

Thank you! Sounds mostly easy enough.
Since you seem to be the one that knows the most (I think I read somewhere you used to be one of the ones that worked for the foundation?) do you have any idea when Utah got the XP upgrade discs?
I'm trying to remember if the others got upgraded before or after a random tech guy put a domain controller on our network (and then didn't come back) and even the city tech guys can't figure how to get new computers on it. (Not that I am really impressed with the city techs...). I'm just worried I'll have issues getting it back on the network and mapping a network drive once I get it upgraded.
Thanks for your help!!!

Hi -
Yes, I used to be a trainer and then did tech support for the US Library Program during the years these were installed.
I don't remember exactly when Utah got the XP upgrade, but it must have been late 2003 or the first 1/2 of 2004.
If this is a big enough concern, there is another way to go about upgrading the computer - you can always just Ghost the drive from a working Gates PC. The low-tech way is to put both hard drives in one pc, and boot to a Ghost floppy or CD and make a direct copy of the drive.
Once copied and back in it's original computer, you would want to log in and change the computer name, and the IP address if static, before connecting it to the network.
If you need Ghost to do this, you can usually get older versions of it cheap on Ebay. There are also free alternatives, but I don't have any experience with any of them. Here is a list though: http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml

Thanks again for the info. I'm going to try the regular upgrade first then Ghost if I run into issues.
One more question though. I seem to remember the upgrade taking a long time, do you remember how long it takes?

Hello, me again,
Thanks for all the info, it's all upgraded with no problems. However, there is another issue with this computer that is probably unrelated to upgrading it but I thought this might be the place for it since it's the same computer.
No matter what I do with the profile restrictions under 'all', the C: drive is letting me burrow around everywhere I want. I can also hit delete and it acts like it will delete the file, brings up the little graphic that indicates it's moving to the recycle bin, but then it does come up with an 'access denied' message, saying it's either in use or restricted.
So, it looks like besides disallowing people into C: the restrictions are working just fine. However, it makes me nervous they can get in that far and try to delete stuff.
My question is, should I be nervous and should I be concerned that there might be something else wrong that will allow them to make changes to the computer?
I'm using the same osv2 file as the other Gates computers we have, and the same restrictions, but it's behaving differently and I can't figure why.
Thanks again for any input you might have!
