Not able to save to desktop or 'my documents' after changing acces to drive
6:33 PM EST 11/12/07
Not too long ago I posted and found help about adding more drive letters so users can use more than one usb device.

This is that thread:
http://www.webjunction.org/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=7543&tstart=0

That was successful, but since then, users cannot save to the desktop or 'my documents' like they were able to before the change to allow for more drive letters.

I've looked everywhere I can think of to fix it but am having no luck.

The changes I made included changes to 'prevent access to these drives from my computer' and 'hide these specified drives in my computer' via the profile editor. I also installed the oSv2.adm file and made a few changes by hand to the coding, as said in the thread I linked to. I'm not sure if the changes are related the new inablility to save things, but it seems likely, though I'm sure I did everything right and only made changes to viewing and accessing drives through 'my computer.'

Any idea if I'm right, that somehow the changes made users unable to save things, and how to fix it?

ETA: Apparently, I can save to the desktop with IE, but PowerPoint and Microsoft Word tell me there are administrative restrictions preventing me from saving to the desktop or my documents. Now I'm more confused...

And while I'm at it, (I've looked for this too and maybe haven't looked deep enough) how would I go about setting up the Gates computers so that users can install programs? Since the harddrive is locked, any installed programs will be cleared upon reboot, correct? So we would like to give the users more abilities with the computers, if possible.

Thanks!

So, I think the change that is causing the problem is 'prevent access to these drives from my computer'. You probably need to change that setting o that it does not block C.

The other setting will still hide C in My Computer, but preventing access completely blocks the user from saving to the drive, which is where the desktop folder resides. The C: drive is still protected through file and folder level security permissions that keep the user from saving to most places on C.

If you want to try allowing users full access to do things like install programs, I think the best way to do that is to just create new user account as you normally would. This account will not have any of the profile security applied to it, so users should be able to do anything they normally would. Keep in mind that there will still be the restriction that if what they want to install requires a reboot, that won't work.

Restricting drive C was the problem, thanks dalem! It's all fixed now.

And I'll try creating a new user and seeing what that does for us.

Thanks again.
