On one of our Gateways, has the following message once the computer is turn on.
Invalid Boot Diskette;
Insert Boot Diskette In A:

There is no diskette in the A drive. I am not sure if the OS needs to be reinstalled or formatted.

When I try to change the bios to have it boot up from a CD the password won't work.

Hi tfinney,

Here is a link to a response for the same issue that another library had. Sorry to say that it doesn't look like great news for your machine.

Thanks Kendra,

I also had a chat with Gateway and they suggested that I removed the floppy drive and then place a bootable CD on the drive and see what happens?

Well I did remove the floppy drive and the computer was then able to boot-up without me using the bootable CD.

The floppy drive was suspected to be faulty and may need to be replaced.

Glad you found a workaround. Just thought I'd mention that it does sound as though the boot order is set wrong in BIOS as well. It really should be set to boot from C: only - not to look at the floppy - this keeps anyone from booting to their own disk (once you get the floppy replaced).

In theory, the BIOS password on any Gates pc should be the first two letters of your library name (not the initials) followed by your zip code. Detailed instructions, including how to reset it on the E4600 model if the password doesn't work can be found here on PAComputing.
