Hi Dale,
We are going to be adding 2 new computers with Vista on them. Will the PACTool work on these? I haven't ordered them yet. Is there anything special I should put on the new ones?

Hi-

No, absolutely don't try to use the PAC Security Tool with Vista - it isn't really even 100% compatible with XP SP2.

For Vista your best bet is to wait for version 2.0 of Microsoft's Shared Computer Toolkit. It should be out any time now, and it does everything that the PAC Tool plus the Centurion Guard did on the Gates computers.

My other thought is that you should make sure you really want to move to Vista just now. The biggest issues I've been seeing are with software compatibility. You definitely want to research and be certain that anything you need to have running on these machines is really Vista compatible. And make sure you are checking for the specific versions of programs you have.

Libraries have and advantage here, in that if you choose to have XP put on your new computers now, you can always get Vista through TechSoup later for only $10 a license. So it makes that path much more attractive.

I can see the Vista Business upgrade is already available. Do you know if other versions will be made available? What about full versions rather than upgrades? I am interested in Ultimate edition right now.

I think that the Windows licenses offered through that program have always been upgrade rather than full version licenses. I would also guess that since the Business version is what is now up, that is what they will be offering. It is kind of a drag that you have to go all the way up to Ultimate to get a version that isn't missing features.

But if you want to get a real answer, your best bet would be to contact TechSoup.
