Reading games / Gates machines / transferring
4:22 PM EST 12/6/06
I've read the posts regarding the transfer of several games from the Gates granted NT machines to XP machines (side note - THANKS!).
Question. Any words of wisdom for installing the Reader Rabbit, Math Blaster, etc. onto an XP hard drive so that they will run without the CDs?
thanks in advance.

There are two ways to do this, depending on whether or not the game has CD copy protection built in. If there is copy protection, you will need a CDROM emulation application. This is software that fools your pc into thinking that a folder on your hard drive is actually a CDROM drive.

I don't know how to tell ahead of time if the copy protection is there, you mostly have to try method 1 and if it still asks for the CD, then go to method 2. I do know that most games aimed at teens have copy protection, while at least many or most games aimed at younger kids don't. The Reader Rabbit games I have worked with did not have copy protection.

1. The Easy Way
· Create a folder on your hard drive. Best practice (but not necessary) is for this to be on a separate partition or drive - something other than C:.
· Copy the entire contents of the CDROM into this folder. Remove the CD from the drive.
· Run setup from inside the folder. If the game had already been installed from the CD, you will need to uninstall the game first.
· That's it. If there is no copy protection the game should run.

2. The Harder Way - If after the easy way you are still asked for the CD, you will need to try this.
· First you need the CDROM emulation app. There are many out there, the most popluar commercial product is Virtual CD. But I would recommend looking at Daemon Tools because it is both free and seems to work well. One thing about Daemon Tools though is that as you install it, it will want to install adware at the same time (SaveNow I think). You just need to pay attention and uncheck that box when installing.
· Make sure the game is uninstalled.
· Then just follow the instructions for the application to setup that folder with the CD contents as a new drive. It will get a drive letter and show up as a CDROM drive in My Computer, etc.
· Now run setup from this new 'virtual drive.'

Dale
