Windows XP Upgrade in Wisconsin - fails on disc 4 - "file not found" error
Windows XP Upgrade in Wisconsin - fails on disc 4 - "file not found" error
3:18 PM EDT 5/9/05
A library recently called with a strange situation - they have performed the upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP on three of their 5 GLCs. Everything worked great. They then moved on to workstation #4 and they then run into problems. The first three discs of the upgrade work fine and then the 4th disc fails after a short time and returns a "file not found" error message. This then aborts the entire upgrade process.

Has anyone seen anything similar or have any suggestions?

Yes, and yes.

Of course, best practice would have been to do they upgrade back when they got it and we were there to help (sorry, couldn't help myself there).

Occasionally, a DVD player will have trouble with a particular upgrade DVD. First stick DVD 4 in another GLC to make sure the disk is still readable. Assuming it is, the workaround is to either swap DVD players between this one and one of the other GLC’s, or else stick this hard drive in one of the other GLC’s to upgrade it. The first solution has the advantage that the second pc is only down for the 10 – 15 minutes it takes to swap out the DVD.

Someone from Iowa just asked this same question here a couple of weeks ago and they were also able to get Gateway to replace the DVD drive.

Thanks Dale - I looked and looked for this as I could have sworn that I remembered something about this, but my memory is failing quickly and I could not find it. Good at least to know that it was a fairly related situation and that I was not just imagining it. I will relay the information to the library and see what they report. I did recommend that they at least try it in another drive and see if it worked as it seemed to me that the DVD was probably not the problem.

See that message above where chrisabo is chided (in early 2005) for not doing the upgrade earlier.... Um....

I am doing an upgrade and 8 or 9 minutes into the first DVD, I get an error message "Error #1802 Image file is invalid or corrupted". I have tried this on two machines, so I don't think it's the DVD drive - I think it's the DVD. I'm going to try getting a DVD from a neighboring library, so will keep you posted, but if there's anything I'm missing or if you've encountered this before and think using a different DVD is not the answer, please give a holla.

Thank you!
Brenda

Brenda, Brenda, Brenda...

I must first correct your entirely mistaken impression that I was chiding dear mister chrisabo about doing the XP Upgrade. In fact, I was chiding some unknown library he was asking the question for. At that time our mr. chrisabo was still drawing a paycheck from a certain large foundation and had not yet entered the real world of Texas libraries.

Anyway....

Sounds like you did just the right thing. If you get the 1802 error on two different machines at the same point in the process, it is almost certainly the disk. If it was drive errors or some other hardware issue, it would happen at more random seeming times, often on different disks each time you try. Just make sure to try to borrow a set that has been used successfully if possible.

Shoot! I thought it would be fun for Chrisabo to be in a little bit of trouble.

Alright - the new DVD - borrowed from a nearby library - worked like a charm. We are upgraded! Can we get our money back for that bad DVD?

Thanks for checking in on these boards - it's nice to know you're out there!
