Moving Games from old Gates computers to new Windows XP computers

I need some information on the steps involved in moving games from the old Gates Windows NT 4.0 computers to Dell computers with Windows XP to be used on a Limited Profile.

The easiest is to have both computers on the same network.
Share out the data drive on the GLC that has all the software folders.
From the XP computer, browse to the GLC and copy the folders for all the games to the XP (best practice is to use a seperate data drive or partition, but not necessary).
Once copied, install the games from the folders. Depending on what state you are in, there are several to many of the games that need specific, non-standard installations to run on XP. You can find those instructions in the document here:

we recently were granted money for more new computers (ya!) I've followed the discussion on copying the old Gates children's games over and at first I thought I was successful. I partitioned my hard drive and copied over and installed.

The games seemed to work, but I am afraid that with the Microsoft Shared Toolkit, I am missing a setting because now new users can't play the games. They get an error message about not being able to run the .exe file.

I have tried copying and pasting from the Documents and Settings > Executive > Start menu > Programs into the limited user, thinking that maybe the limited user (patron) needed access that way. nope. then I tried in the User Restrictions opening up acces to the user by allowing them to see the E: drive where I put all of the games. nope.

any suggestions? thanks in advance. I may have to forgo having the old games on our newest computers.

Hi-

It would help to know the exact error message you get, and whether you are getting the same error in all or just some of the games. But here are two things you can try:

First, it is always a good idea when you create profiles with the toolkit, to log in to the profile and run all the applications once before installing the restrictions. If possible give that a try, and see if you can still run the game from a limited, but not locked down account.

Second is that some of these games need write access to their own program directories (definitely true of MSemoticon. To do this, log in to your admin account and:
1. Browse the hard drive to C:\Program Files\
2. Find the program folder for one of the games.
3. Right-click on the folder and choose Properties
4. Click on the Security tab
5. In the top half of the box, select the Users group
6. In the bottom half, place a check next to Modify in the Allow column.
7. Click OK. Try running the game in the locked-down profile.
