Other Outreach Possibilities

I've also got a couple of those "things I wish to do but can't quite figure out how."

One of them, In my case, is due to a lack of proper space.

I'd like to get a microfilm camera (a planetary camera) and offer archival storage for church documents (making copies for both the church and the library). This would serve two purposes: build a local history archive -- which digital media cannot do -- and help us build partnerships( or at least relationships) with the various churches.

Those old church bulletins, if they exist at all, are moldering in basements. Might as well collect them at the library, in my view.

I just wanted to mention that although I have not yet jumped into the conversation today, I am following along and have been inspired these last two days by the great ideas you all have put forth.

I am especially interested in librarybob's thought to create a partnership with local churches to collect and archive church bulletins and other documents. But I'm curious: why microfilm? Wouldn't a digital project take care of your space issue?

As luck would have it, we're thinking about easy digital projects for libraires for our focus *next month* but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves... emoticon

[Also, a note on the forums: just wanted to comment on the "slipping" replies. I believe that Bob's referring to the fact that his messages show up later down the line. If you have your "control panel" settings (upper right corner link) set to "flat" all replies will show up in chronologic order, thus slipping replies down to the time/day they were posted (first to last). You can change to tree and threaded views if you'd like to see where the replies come in (instead). The default view is flat - so that it's more like a conference than a thread.]

Chrystie, thanks for bringing up the "view" issue. I switched to threaded view yesterday so I could see who was replying to which post. I forgot to share that tip with the wide world.

You can find more information on message board views here:

Hi Chrystie,

The reason for microfilm is that it will last as much as 500 years (assuming silver based). Digital media, while great for distribution, are problematic ... a recent article in Computerworld (online) stated that burned CDs only last 2 to 5 years.

That's not to say that the microfilm can't also be scanned to make an accessible "archive," but that's not something that future historians can rely on.

Yet.

YMMV, IMHO, etc. :-)

However participating in RIF distributions, attending other events in the city and working with the Historical Museum help to increase our visibility. We participate in a Safety Day and a Kids Expo with a booth and hand out gioodies and related library items. One librarian is in the quilters guild, another is on the Beautification Commission, another is part of the historical society publications committee.
We don't have a lot of staff turn around and we are all recognized out in the community as I Know You--You work at the Library. In a small community giving great service to all is important as you never know who is related to the mayor, council, school board etc.
Knowing the players by name is invaluable. Treating their kids right is a must.
Being out in the city gives many people the feeling that I have a "personal' librarian who will answer my question with a call back, give a quick book talk, or even return this book!
Don't overlook your visibility!

Conjaw: Hi again,

In many urban and proably rural communities the church still holds a pretty central place in the lives of many of the community members. Many churches attempt to run after school programs, tutoring programs and the like...I suspect that they might welcome a field trip to their local library to augment the study skills of their students.

You can request that information about programming at your library be placed in the church bulletin community activities section.

The library can also out reach to daycare home providers by planning activities especially geared toward these providers and youngsters. There are also agency that work closley with care givers and the library could place itself on thgeir agendas.
Senior citizens centers and nursing home may provide new venues for library services...
Just thought I would add this comment.
