knoppix downloads
3:01 PM EDT 6/20/04
I have Tim Mallory from Shelton Timberland Library with me and he's interested in posting a question about possible sites where you can download knoppix (the operating system) in less than 12 hours (over a DSL line).

Maybe a question that djsarge can help us with, as he seems to be the emerging open source "guru" emoticon

Thanks dj!

Tim is planning to register at WebJunction - so once he is on board perhaps you two can connect behind the scenes through the member directory.

I appreciate your going the extra mile here, you're the best!

Please tell him that I will look for places where he can purchase a disk for under $10 or we can find a way for me to send him a CD. The downloads of Linux over DSL are long!!!

thanks, I'd appreciate having it on CD, as my intent after download was to burn it to a CD anyway. Tim

The Open Source Education Foundation just put together a bootable GNU/Linux OS called Knoppix for Kids with a great bunch of children's educational software included. There is a link about the load of CDs they made to distribute at the NECC conference at www.osef.org. You might email them to see if there are any more copies available.
knoppix download on ibiblio

Anyone interested in downloading Knoppix could try ibiblio.org. I always save my big downloads (or schedule them) for late evening. On my DSL the download progressed at about 100KB/sec if I remember correctly--just over an hour for the CD iso image.

Hey RLW, and welcome to our discussion. Did you stop by for the OSS event? You're new to All Aboard, but not in the member directory; why not stop by the "Introduce Yourself..." topic and tell us about yourself and your consulting! emoticon

We have a current "knoppix" topic, so an administrator will move this post in a bit, but I wanted to welcome you to All Aboard and say thanks for posting the knoppix link.

No worries! I'm going to check into why you're not showing up in the member directory, btw. I'm certainly puzzled.

Christie:

Thanks for the reply. Sorry about posting the message in the wrong area. I thought I was posting in the previous knoppix topic, but apparently clicked the wrong link.

And I'm not sure why my entry is not showing up in the Member Directory. That setting in my profile is "YES".

I primarily do technology training for small public libraries in Texas, along with a bit of general technology consulting per request. This coming year I hope to be doing a lot focus on public training in the Linux desktop as a low-cost alternative to "regular" Windows office desktops. So I've been interested to see what crops up in this OSS discussion.

Thanks for your welcome!
