Help! Server died
12:09 PM EDT 8/20/07
Our server, which is about 7 years old, just died. The OS is/was Server 2003. It hosted Athena, so we are on paper and pencil until we can replace it. Our backup is on tape. I believe we will need a server with a tape drive in order to recover our files.

Please give suggestions as to what we need to buy in a server. Of course we have the Athena software to install. Is there any way to recover the taped backup without getting a tape drive in the server?
We also had our antivirus distributed from the server. We have 9 public computers and 3 for staff use, not counting the server.

We will appreicate any help.

Ann -

That does not sound like a fun situation.

To figure out what you need in a server, I would start with the Athena system requirements (warning - that is a PDF). Just glancing at them they don't look very hard to meet, but of course it will also depend on anything else you may be using the server for.

About the tape drive. The first thing I would do is see if you can't just pull the drive out of the old server and hook it up, at least temporarily to the new one - you should be able to do that.

Thanks very much. We will look into the tape drive transfer.
