Server Hard Drive Question
3:01 PM EDT 6/20/04
I am by no means a server expert.

What is the advantage of partitioning the drive? I notice a lot of folks used one partition for Windows and one for everything else?

What if you were going to run SQL software for a time management setup of your PCs?

Thanks as always,

Chad

One of the biggest reasons for partitioning is to keep the OS separate from the application and data files. It gives you more flexibility in backup and restores. You can restore your application folders and data folders without having to necessarily reinstall the OS for example.

Security is also more straightforward as you can lock down the OS partition in one fell swoop and then ease up on things on your app/data drive.

I'm sure others can come up with other reasons, but those are 2 that come to mind.

And conversely, if the OS gets hosed or you want to upgrade the OS, you can reformat that partition and reinstall clean.
