Online meetings for book discussion?
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04
I'm curious to know of any libraries
who've done or are doing online book discussions using Web conferencing or message boards. If you know if any, please post. Thanks!

Celisa, this would be interesting. I don't personally know of a library doing this.
What a great idea!
San Antonio Public Library has links to in person book groups (at branches) and online book groups (external to the library) on their fiction page.
And the Hennepin County Library has an online discussion group by email.
Anyone else talking about doing what celisa suggests?
It seems to me that some kind of organized chatting function is really all you would need. Or, would there be benefits to having a more interactive experience?

Coincidentally, I'm attending the kick-off meeting today at our local middle-school, where we will be offering online book discussions for local 8th graders.
Were using Snitz forums: http://forum.snitz.com/

The idea with Web conferencing was to try to truly mimic the on-the-ground experience of a book group, so, yes, people may not be saying things that are particularly well thought out, but just as with in-person meetings, some free association and interaction of ideas in the moment can lead to some really good discussions. Thanks to everybody for sharing!
