Online meetings for book discussion?
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04
I'm curious to know of any libraries

who've done or are doing online book discussions using Web conferencing or message boards. If you know if any, please post. Thanks!

Our librray is also offering that Online Book Club - I admit I haven't gone to the discussion forum yet, though. Woman's Day magazine also has an online forum with a book discussion group. It doesn't necessarily have to be live chat to be effective, I guess! And it's certainly easier to check in with your opinion when you can, instead of having to be online at a specific time.

Celisa, this would be interesting. I don't personally know of a library doing this.

What a great idea!

San Antonio Public Library has links to in person book groups (at branches) and online book groups (external to the library) on their fiction page.

And the Hennepin County Library has an online discussion group by email.

Anyone else talking about doing what celisa suggests?

It seems to me that some kind of organized chatting function is really all you would need. Or, would there be benefits to having a more interactive experience?

Ok, a little tiny more searching on this and look what I found...!

The Lawrence Public Library has an online book group that delivers chapters by email - and then participants discuss the book in an online forum.

Very, very cool.

Coincidentally, I'm attending the kick-off meeting today at our local middle-school, where we will be offering online book discussions for local 8th graders.

Were using Snitz forums: http://forum.snitz.com/

Chat, in my view, is probably the worst of all possible forms for a group discussion -- leastways if you want people to put much thought in their responses. It *can* be done with the right group of people, but the "affordances" (the tool characteristics) work against it.

The idea with Web conferencing was to try to truly mimic the on-the-ground experience of a book group, so, yes, people may not be saying things that are particularly well thought out, but just as with in-person meetings, some free association and interaction of ideas in the moment can lead to some really good discussions. Thanks to everybody for sharing!

I haven't done this with the library, but the book club I'm in has a Yahoo Group to discuss things between meetings.

For an existing library group, it might be a nice addition for folks who miss a meeting to keep up with the discussion.
