problems loading pages...
7:22 PM EST 11/22/05
One of our PAC rooms have six computers all "ghosted" off the same image. They are running Windows 2000, Service Pack 4. They are not Gates machines - but they do have Centurion guard installed on all of them.
Here is the problem. When a patron types the address into the addres bar and hits enter - nothing happens. They get a white screen and "Done" appears in the bottom left corner. If you hit refresh it usually pops right up. OR you can use the "Search" button on the toolbar and search for the address. If you choose the website from the search results - it appears. BUT never if you type the address in directly. We know for sure that this happens EVERY time someone tries to access Yahoo.com or Google.com. I THINK it sometimes happens with other pages - but those are the two biggies. Any thoughts? Our computer tech said that "some websites just have problems loading" but I find it hard to belive that EVERY SINGLE TIME that someone tries to access yahoo - this happens. And it NEVER happens in our other PAC rooms which were not ghosted off the same image. I have a feeling that there was some setting changed or "set wrong" in the initial image and that got propagated to all six machines.
Any one have ideas? Our Circ Desk people (which is where you sign up for these computers) are getting REALLY tired of having to give a 5 minute briefing of how to get to Yahoo. And the patrons are getting mad b/c they think our computers don't work....
Thanks!

Well - to be honest - I don't know if it happens in the administrator's account b/c our "computer guy" won't give me the password. BUT at the same time - he is too busy to come over here and fool with it. And don't THINK we are using a proxy server. The setup is just like you would have at home - olny running thru a router. His answer when I mention this problem "All websites do that sometimes...even on my computer at home. You just have to hit refresh and it will work." He explains it once and it is no big deal... try explaining it 75 times a day to people who are not computer literate and think that "the Internet is broken".
I maintain that it is NOT normal for this to happen every single time you try to go to a particular website.... But I am trying to find out as much info as I can so I can present it to him as "The reason this is happing is XYZ and in order to fix it we need to ABC".
Anyone have other thoughts?

Aahhh, the 'computer guy.'
Proxy - probably you aren't, the most common reason to use one is for filtering.
Of course it's not normal. If it was normal, it would have always been that way, would happen on all your computers and everyone would be used to it by now, and you wouldn't be bothering mister computer guy.
With Centurion Guards, you can rule out a bunch of things - there can't have been an infection, or something going on with the cache, or something else that has happened in software from use. You are really left with how the computers are setup.
So maybe the IE security settings interfering with certain kinds of content loading? If the public accounts are locked down in addition to the CG, there could be an issue with that security. Unfortunately the list goes on, but those seem like the two likely places to start. Will he give you the admin password if you promis not to unlock the CG and let him change it again next time he comes out? There is no permanent damage you could possible do in that case.
Another thought is that it could be a DNS issue, and could be as simple as the DNS setting on these being different than your other computers. Try typing this into the address box and see what happens: http://72.14.203.99 - if you get Google, then it is a DNS issue somehow.
You're original descrption was very specific, and made it clear to me there is something going on. Since it happens consistently in the same situation it should be easy to test. But I don't have definite solution, and you are really restricted right now in what you can actually find out.

We do not have that "content advisor" activated. Actually, I HAVE the little key to unlock the CG - he didn't have a problem with leaving that - it is just that "magic word" that is so closely guarded. > > Another thought is that it could be a DNS issue, and > could be as simple as the DNS setting on these being > different than your other computers. Try typing this > into the address box and see what happens: > http://72.14.203.99 - if you get Google, then it is a > DNS issue somehow. OK - I tried this - it did not work. Well - I should say it worked the same as if I had typed in www.google.com. White screen at first - when I clicked "refresh" it popped up.
I thought that perhaps it was one of those settings about "check for a new version of the page"... (You know - it would work the first time but then everytime someone went to the page AFTER that first time, it wouldn't work. Nope - I had just restarted it and "cleared out" all the previous day's mess - and it still didn't work.
I guess what I am hoping for is this - a list of "possibilities" that I can pass along that say "TRY THESE SPECIFIC THINGS" you know - simpliify it as much as possible for him so he does have to sit here and "fuss" with it....That may be nearly impossible without seeing the individual machines - but any thoughts you have would be appreciated....
Thanks in advance!
