Question: We currently have seven computers connected to the Internet using Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing and a DSL modem.
Can you recommend a cheap or free firewall that we can use to protect our network? Answer: There are lots of firewalls out there that come in all different shapes and sizes. They range in cost from free to $10,000.
They can either be entirely separate components or software that you install on your computer. For more information, check
out my Firewalls and Your Library article. The best cheap firewall that I have found is Zone Lab's Zone Alarm. This firewall is simple to install and use, and though you may still have to do some advanced configuring with it (I did),
it is possible to do advanced configuring with it and not lose your mind. The best part is that Zone Labs is offering an older version for free to single users and nonprofits! Even their non-free
versions are pretty cheap. Check out their downloads page for the various options. You need to scroll all the way to the bottom to find the free version. You would need to install this only on the machine running the Internet Connection Sharing to protect your network from all
sorts of attacks. Good luck! |
