Check out Nielsen's PDF July 2008 article about the mobile internet becoming a part of many consumers' experience.
http://www.nielsen.com/solutions/Mobile%20report.pdfI think it is time to pay attention! I'd love my own iPhone (top of my "wish list" since the new one came out) but had no interest in my husband's Blackberry. Nielsen states the iPhone is the second most popular device with mobile internet users - 82 % of these users access the mobile internet.
What do our library patrons want from a mobile site?
Thanks to awesome support of a key web developer at Maine.gov, I had good training and built a mobile website for Maine State Library users. Simple, slim, and only a few key links. Although I did some user testing on needs and how they will use, it's still a work in progress. "Ask a Librarian" link dials automatically with a click, FAQs to get a library card, contacts, hours, and other wireless libraries in Maine.
People are using these links, especially to Maine libraries that are wireless. Each library link goes to the library's profile with their address and hours. (GPS then?)
