Avatars
Covers best practices and style guidelines for creating an avatar on WebJunction.

See also Create an Avatar for instructions on adding an avatar to your WebJunction profile.

Things to Consider When Creating an Avatar

  • Your avatar is a powerful way to say something about yourself, to make a statement or just add some spice to your profile
  • Your avatar can be an icon, graphical image, or digital photo
  • The image can be of you, or of something that represents you
  • Make sure the image looks good in thumbnail format (flickr allows you to view pictures as a thumbnail)--that is, as small as your thumbnail.
  • Only upload images that you have the rights to use and distribute. For example, an image of Mickey Mouse is owned by Disney Corp. and unavailable for you to use as your avatar.

Examples of Avatars from other sites:

  • Flickr displays its staff's avatars on its "About Us" page
  • Facebook shows its own profile page as an example of how avatars are used and displayed
  • LinkedIn gives a screenshot of a typical user profile page that uses an avatar
  • WebJunction's Twitter page shows the avatars of all the people who are "following" us on Twitter.
  • Create your own avatar, for example, with Yahoo! tools: http://avatars.yahoo.com/
