I think the number one issue can be summed up in one word: Tomorrow.
Kids adopt the technology that is around them. New technologies are arriving in quick succession ... just keeping up is a full-time job for science/technology writers ... but to kids these seem entirely natural.
Unfortunately, kids are also poor judges of content because they generally lack perspective.
Our library task involves delivery useful content in ways that our future voters will want to use. There's no way to do that save through the use of appropriate technologies.
This isn't to say that libraries need to be on the "cutting edge" (much less the "bleeding edge") ... but we cannot, ever, afford to find ourselves on the "trailing edge." That is far too close to irrelevancy.

Thanks to the folks at LISnews.com I came across a really useful resource from the the UNC School of Information and Library Science: Taxpayer Return-On-Investment (ROI) in Pennsylvania Public Libraries.

Lots of talking point in there, for sure. An annual ROI of almost 4 to 1 is better than any business you're likely to encounter.
