Does anybody have tips or a list of talking points that staff and/or trustees can use to promote the value of technology in the library?

Great question shorn!

I'm becoming a real supporter of talking points since I have a hard time keeping all the key points "at the ready" for those advocacy opportunities. I'm hoping those that have their list ready will share here, but I thought I'd point out a few places on WJ that may help you get started.

The Funding Strategies area has some great resources and best practices on how to demonstrate library impact. I don't know that there are examples promoting specifically the value of technology, but I'd suggest the Making Your Case resources for pulling together talking points that would promote the value of technology for achieving the mission of your library.

Tips, lists, anyone??

I think the number one issue can be summed up in one word: Tomorrow.

Kids adopt the technology that is around them. New technologies are arriving in quick succession ... just keeping up is a full-time job for science/technology writers ... but to kids these seem entirely natural.

Unfortunately, kids are also poor judges of content because they generally lack perspective.

Our library task involves delivery useful content in ways that our future voters will want to use. There's no way to do that save through the use of appropriate technologies.

This isn't to say that libraries need to be on the "cutting edge" (much less the "bleeding edge") ... but we cannot, ever, afford to find ourselves on the "trailing edge." That is far too close to irrelevancy.

I wonder if it would be useful to do presentations like what Steven Abram and Richard Madaus so for various conferences? They get the audiences at conferences whipped up into a frenzy, salivating at the new technologies that are right around the corner... It would be even interesting to have a (well-spoken) young adult perhaps do the presentation...good practice for them and the trustees and staff would be hearing it from the horses mouth so to speak.

Thanks to the folks at LISnews.com I came across a really useful resource from the the UNC School of Information and Library Science: Taxpayer Return-On-Investment (ROI) in Pennsylvania Public Libraries.

http://www.statelibrary.state.pa.us/libraries/lib/libraries/PAROIreportFINAL7.pdf

Lots of talking point in there, for sure. An annual ROI of almost 4 to 1 is better than any business you're likely to encounter.
