Informing Library Patrons about Wireless Internet Access
Here are some tips about what patrons need to know about wireless internet access in your library and how you can tell them.
@2005 OCLC, Online Computer Library Center, Inc.

Aside from reading and understanding your acceptable internet use policy, patrons will need a "How-To Connect to the Internet Using Our Wireless Connection" quick guide or handout. Used in combination with a support-oriented FAQ (see our article on Supporting the Public Side of Wireless Access), these instructions can explain how to connect a Windows 2000/XP or Mac OS X computer using your library's service set identifier (SSID). The SSID is the unique name that identifies a wireless network.

The Scottsdale Public Library http://library.scottsdaleaz.gov/atmylibrary/wifiins.pdf, the Boston Public Library http://www.bpl.org/general/wireless.htm and the Palo Alto City Library http://www.city.palo-alto.ca.us/library/news-events/wireless.html all have good examples of these types of directions.

This type of documentation is especially important if you implement an authentication mechanism where the patron has to enter a username/password combination before being connected.  (A quick note:  To save you and your staff from a line of frustrated patrons at the desk,  test your instructions before you have them printed!  One misplaced step in the instructions can cause a lot of confusion for someone new to wireless or to your system.)
