It's difficult to make a blanket statement about how library staff will feel about your library offering wireless internet access to users. Some will feel put upon, like it's just another technology they don't know anything about but should be expected to support. Some will be happy - they are tired of explaining to people why there are time limits on the existing public access computers and acting as "computer cops" when people don't want to share the computers. Some will feel both. Once you decide to set up a wireless network segment in your building, try to sit down and discuss this move with the staff. If face-to-face staff meetings around this topic aren't feasible, you could send everyone an e-mail or a good old-fashioned paper memo explaining what the addition of wireless to the library will mean for them. Most will simply want to know how the addition of this technology to the library will affect their day-to-day work tasks. What will they need to know in order to effectively serve the library's patrons? This is where your support documentation can come in handy. If you have created a thorough FAQ about wireless for your patrons, you can easily adapt that for your staff. Go over this documentation with them, pointing out any important disclaimers you make that they should in turn point out to patrons. Also, you will want to make sure your staff knows about any changes to your "Acceptable Internet Use" which address the wireless connection. A simple "Wireless 101" or "How wireless internet access works" training session (either in person or online) can be helpful to explain the basics and demystify the technology. It probably goes without saying that you should discuss with the staff any "how-to" guides that you create for patrons. Treat the introduction of wireless technology in the library as you would the addition of any new service. Let the staff know what sorts of things will be expected from them and give them the tools and information they need to do it.
