What do you think of the new site? What can we do to make it better?

Your feedback will help us identify how things are going on the new platform and help us find and prioritize any bugs in the new system. We'll collect any suggestions you may have about how to make improvements for WebJunction members in the future.

As always, WebJunction is a work in progress and we depend on your input to guide our overall development.

You're also welcome to contact us with your feedback.

If you have ideas for the next phase of the new site, be sure to post those in the Site Feature Request Group.

Many thanks for being a part of the WebJunction community. We look forward to hearing from you!

I think it would be nice to put "public library" down as an organization type on the profile page. Granted you can select other, and have whatever you type show up in your profile, but it really should be on of the main options.

Heck, yeah, that should be there! Sometimes you get strange lists when a developer refers to a graphic design "lorem ipsum" wireframe! With our next install, the drop-down should change to the list below - what do you think??? :
Choose One...
State Agency or Association
Public Library
Library Consortium
School Library
Academic Library
Special Library
Vendor
Other (please specify below)

I like the basic site and its organization. I dislike very much the very limited profile and real lack of real social networking that I have gotten used to via such sites as library20.ning.com that I created on Ning. the profile page needs such things as connections to Twitter, FaceBook, LInkedIN, and more. It should interact with their APIs. The content is still good. Friend request e-mails are nice but the links back to profiles is broke. emoticonemoticon

12:59 PM EDT 8/4/08 as a reply to Bill Drew.
Hi Bill - I saw your tweet as well on the broken friend email links. We're looking into that right now to see what the deal is, thanks for flagging that. On things like interaction with outside social network API's and more/better social tools overall, those are all on the site wish list - we'd love to do them at some later point, but we had to prioritize what we felt would be the core of a good experience for this particular launch.

Great feedback though, most of us are passionate users of a LOT of social networking tools, so we're always looking for ways to make the experience better.

Thanks for responding. I know I came down hard but with the hype I saw on my e-mail in the announcement I expected more. The site has come a long ways. I guess I expected OCLC to put more money, people resources, and such behind what has the potential to be the most valuable service offered by OCLC.
RE: Feedback Discussion
8:37 PM EDT 8/4/08 as a reply to Jennifer Peterson.
I've been looking around the new Webjunction for about an hour an a half now and have found it a frustrating experience. (I am NOT a novice with web applications, BTW.)

I logged in to webjunction.org, watched the intro video, and edited my profile. Then I started exploring.

First reaction: Pages took a long time to load (typically 5 to 10 seconds on DSL). Also on many pages I had to scroll sideways to see all the content.

Clicked around....got a feel for what was where. Continued to get sluggish page loads.

Then I looked at the course offerings. Saw that the one I wanted was $40. So I thought if I logged in to my affiliate site (me.webjunction.org) I would see a lower price. Not sure why I had to log in to my affiliate site AND the main site. I don't recall having to do that on the old webjunction. At any rate, once I logged in I saw that the course is free through the Maine State Library. Sweet. So I add it to my cart, and then try to check out. No go. Error message says:

"You have entered invalid data. Please try again. You do not have enough "credit" to make this purchase, either remove some of the items in your cart, contact your administrator or the WJ Support Center."

The price was showing as $0.00 - is this a shopping cart problem, or an affiliation problem?

So I give up on that. Start exploring some more. In the process I am taken away from me.webjunction.org to plain webjunction.org and see that I have to log in again. (I have my browser set to accept all cookies...why am I having to log in again?)

Clicked around some more, read some discussions. Found this feedback thread.

In summary, my initial visit included:
- very sluggish page loads
- many pages required sideways scrolling to see everything
- shopping cart did not work
- had to log in to separately to the main site and to my affiliated site (Maine)

Site performance and usability of features did not meet my expectations.

Hi Robert,
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback about the new WebJunction site. We are still fine tuning the performance, so please bear with us. We are also working on the issue around needing to log into the WJ Central site and our partner sites separately.

I am checking into your question around the sideways scrolling and will ask one of my colleagues to post more information about this issue shortly.

The problems you experienced trying to add a course to your shopping cart on the Maine partner site may have been because you are not yet affiliated with the Maine site. To affiliate, you will need to go to the My Account portlet and click on edit account. Next click on the affiliations tab, check the Maine box, and save your changes. You will receive an email from Maine WebJunction indicating your affiliation has been approved. At that point you will be able to access the courses for free. If you continue to experience problems after your affiliation has been approved PLEASE let us know!
RE: Feedback Discussion
12:42 PM EDT 8/5/08 as a reply to Robert Morss.
Hi Robert,

The site was optimized for 1024 x 768 browser window, so if you are using 800 x 600 that would result in the need to left/right scroll, but something tells me that is not what you are using. If not, next time you come across a page that requires the left/right scroll, do you mind sending the URL to support@webjunction.org? I am aware of a current bug in how tags are listing that can cause a column to distort; but if there are other issues that are causing the page to widen, we'd certainly appreciate the information.

RE: Feedback Discussion
1:47 PM EDT 8/5/08 as a reply to Sharon Streams.
I use 1024x768 screen resolution, but I also have enlarged my default browser fonts so that websites are easier for me to read. I spend a lot of time on the computer each day (between work and home) and I find I need to enlarge the fonts for readability and to avoid eye strain. (The lesson is, I think: don't get older!)

Maybe that is what is causing me to have to scroll horizontally on many of webjunction's pages. But I would have thought your designers would have built in a "fluid" layout to accommodate accessibility. In my own website designs I try to allow for any screen resolution and enlarged fonts, because you can't assume what hardware or viewing preferences your visitors my have.

Laura, I believe I am affiliated with the Maine webjunction. I know I was on the old webjunction, and it is "checked" on my list of affiliates. Also, I was able to login and got the reduced price for the class. Do I have to "re-affiliate" with Maine on the new webjunction?

BTW, I tried checking out my shopping cart again today. This time I got a different error message:
"webjunction.org uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is only valid for *.webjunction.org
(Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)"
RE: Feedback Discussion
1:58 PM EDT 8/5/08 as a reply to Robert Morss.
Hi Robert,

I am with you on the readability issue: I'm very myopic and prefer the larger font size as well. We increased the base font from that of the old site to 12 pt, and made the fonts relative so that members can use the browser resizing like you are doing. I think the sticking point of trying for a fully liquid layout is that certain portlets (such as the discussions) would end up being squished beyond recognition. 3-column liquid layouts are bit a tricky with our "portlet"-based layout (so I'm told, I'm not the designer), so we went with a semi-liquid layout instead. However, we have the goal of continuing to strive for being a completely Section 508-compatible site, so we will continue to fine-tune the CSS to meet those goals.
(I'll let other folks respond to your follow-ups on course purchasing and affiliiation)

Sharon

2:01 PM EDT 8/5/08 as a reply to Robert Morss.
Robert -

First, thanks very much for posting your feedback here, it has been very helpful, especially in uncovering the error with the configuration of the ME course catalog.

Please try the checkout process again, it should be working now.

About the issue of getting logged out when you switch communities. This is a known issue we will be addressing. In the meantime there is a good workaround, which is to check the "Remember Me" box when you log in. This is a another new thing on WJ, in that it really does what it says - you will remain logged in between sessions, and when you come back at any later time (using the same computer and browser). And it will keep you logged in through those community changes.

As Sharon noted, we would really appreciate notes on any specific pages you see that are running off the page. We know about some (like Edit Account), but considering how many pages there are on the site, we may be missing some too.

And finally, we are definitely working on the response time, and it is certainly not consistently where it needs to be yet, but we'll get there.

Dale

p.s. Just saw your follow-up...

In the case of the page issues - are there certain types of pages that are a particular issue? Are you noticing it more on pages with 3 columns, or the home page, etc?

The course checkout was just updated about 15 minutes ago. It would be extrememly helpful if you tried it again and let us know what happens. And if you get the security certificate warning, could you go ahead and go past it (since you aren't entering any cc info)? When we have seen this in the past, we have still been able to complete the transaction, and knowing whether you can do so will at least let us know that the other issue is resolved.

Thanks -

Post Box Expansion
10:15 AM EDT 8/6/08 as a reply to Jennifer Peterson.
I notice that the posts expand to accommodate to the size of any text line (as Notepad does). This eliminates paragraphs and means having to move your browser screen in order to see what was said.

Also, posts should be displayed "per page." Trying to display everything means an interminable wait for long discussions to display ... and is more work for both the WJ server and the member's computer.
RE: Post Box Expansion
12:18 PM EDT 8/6/08 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Hi Bob,
The site was optimized for 1024 x 768 browser size, so that it would not require any left/right scrolling if set to that or higher (600 x 800 will require scrolling). However, it looks like the Discussions missed the boat by about 5 pixels, which is why you are getting the scroll bar. We need to do a little adjustment to the padding settings and column widths.

Yes, having the discussions paginated would reduce load time, esp for those popular forums like St. Jerry's. That feature request has been captured.

Thanks so much for taking the time to send your feedback.

Broken RSS feeds - partially

12:57 PM EDT 8/6/08 as a reply to Jennifer Peterson.
I am finding the RSS feeds for all parts of the site to be working very strangely. In Google Reader, several of the feeds do not display a title for the feed subscription. Title links for each post in the feed take me back to a page on WebJunction with no content in it or else they don't work at all. I took a peek at the actual RSS files for one of them and it looks entirely screwed up as far as the title link for each item in a feed.

Hi,

I generally like what you all have done with this site. I'm sure it was a LOT of work, and I know it's still kind of beta, so I'm okay with some of the problems (e.g. slow page loads). I just thought I'd mention the two things I'd really like to see added:

1) titles for RSS feeds! I'm subscribed to the feed for the group I created, and I'm thrilled to be able to use RSS to follow the discussion, but for that feed, at least for me, in Google Reader, it shows up as "title unknown," which is not very helpful.

2) I'd like to see the groups I belong to in the My Account sidebox as soon as I log in.

Thanks, and on the whole, good work!

Hi Laura -

Good point about the feed names. I don't have a real answer for this, but I do have a Google Reader workaround in the meantime.

In GR, select the unnamed feed, and then click on the Feed Settings button in the upper right of the screen. One of the options there is "Rename subscription". This allows you to enter anything for the name you want GR to display for the feed. Pretty useful even for a lot of feeds that come with names.

There's no preview option when you edit your profile (a great idea though!), but after you make edits, you can see what your public profile looks like by clicking on your name in the "My Account" area, in the right rail. There's lots of information about your profile and making edits to it in the short video: Edit Your Account.

Load times
9:29 AM EDT 8/27/08 as a reply to Jennifer Peterson.
Just noting that the home page now loads in a reasonable amount of time (less than 10 seconds anyway) ... but, unfortunately, the "My WebJunction" page takes more than 30 seconds. Since this is where *my* WebJunction experience begins it is far too slow, especially as the current design forces me back to it in order to find conversations.

I can of course "go back" via the browser, but this would not work for an active community site ... the "very new responses" wouldn't appear.

I don't know if its me, but I'm having timeout issues with webjunction. I tend to take a while when posting replys to posts, sometimes I'm interrupted for 5 min up to an hour before I can finish it and hit post. I'm finding that any time I take more than a few minutes, my session has timed out. VERY IRRITATING! If feels like its a 3 minute timeout. I can't think of any reason to have it expire in that short a time.

Frustrating indeed, Harper!
If you select "Remember Me" when you sign in, it should help the timeout issue. The timeout period is set for 30 min, so that doesn't help you if you're returning to finish your post after 30 min, but I do recommend using word or notepad to compose your messages if you need more time and then paste them in to the discussion thread.

I will log your post with our support team to be sure we have it when we consider adjusting the timeout and do let us know if you continue to have issues so we can note any bugs.

Thanks to the pointer to Caucus, Bob. I had seen it briefly a couple years ago -- it looks like they've continued improving it. The University of Washington has a similar (probably less sophisticated) tool for online learning/communication. It sometimes came up a little shy in the feature department, but was a rock solid tool for conversations with classmates.

I appreciate how Caucus folks allude to the complexity inherent in adding things like a CMS (and LMS) to the mix. We've done some really great stuff integrating those essential systems on the Next WebJunction platform; we just need to rejigger the machine to bump up discussion/group discoverability a bit.

Piece of cake, right? emoticon
RE: Discussions revealed
7:33 PM EST 11/20/08 as a reply to Tim King.
Heh. It's a matter of choices, I'm afraid, with the current architecture riffing off of personal connections (a la Facebook, etc.) rather than abstracted interests (arranged as trees, more or less).

But you know that only too well.

I can see how to do both, but having the base structure in trees simplifies things ... the "personal connections" become a (very local) facet.

(You'll have me channelling Ranganathan soon here ....)

Charles Roth, who writes/owns Caucus, has been working with another company that provides a rather broader arrays of tools: http://www.q2learning.com/

Bill Bruck is the president. He'd be worth a longish chat.

RE: Curious note
7:24 PM EST 12/1/08 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Hi Bob -- Thanks for posting this.

Short story: We're working on it. Longer story? Read on...

As you probably know, we have multiple instances of WebJunction (The main site, sites for our state partners, a site for admin use, etc). Some of these have access restricted to specific populations.

Right now, the logic that generates our Activity feeds shows you all the activity of your friends, no matter where they are posting (such as Jennifer's post on a Partner admin site). This is behavior is confusing because members will often see links they may not have access to. And then when they try to click the links, members see the behavior you experienced -- a redirection to the public profile.

I know this is a jarring experience. It's especially frustrating for us because it hits hardest the folks who are using the updates portlet just the way we intended -- as a community discovery tool!

The good news is that we have identified a fix and are prioritizing with other profile items in our next development cycle.

We'll keep you posted.

Hi Kathy,

Since the lion's share of the content is applicable to Public Libraries, the Library Type section was to create a space specifically for other types of libraries. But that is obviously not made clear enough, so we'll do some tweaking of the overview tab and make sure people can find the public library-focused sections of the site.

Yea OK so I can add it as Other, but that kinda defeats the purpose of a Controlled Vocabulary. I'm assuming these Roles will help find and connect with other librarians doing the same work. That will only happen if we use the same terminology to describe what we do.

Hi James -- that's a great point. We've had a number of requests to increase the "primary" and "secondary" lists. We're still looking at options but I can tell you that some flavor of ILL (acquisitions and/or collection development is another) is coming soon.

Thanks much for your feedback.

Hi all,

I've gotten this twice via e-mail:

Rodney McElveen posted the following to the WebJunction discussion thread to which you are subscribed:

I can't imagine what thread that might be; it doesn't show up on "my" page; and the "View the full thread" link appears to be broken.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for reporting this--our QA testing chocolate obviously got into your email peanut butter. Our dev team has made a database change and modified our conversion scripts which should prevent this in the future.

Best,

Hi Jennifer,

There is no "Discussion" tab under the section Digitization -- http://www.webjunction.org/digitization/. I would like to post a link to a blog that I saw recently about a special type of DVD burner that might be of interest. Could someone please add the tab? Thanks.

Hi Ross, The discussion board is under the parent Technical Services page: http://www.webjunction.org/technical-services/-/resources/discussion. I've added a link to the Digitization page.
